Every Star Trek series gets progressively worse because they keep forgetting the core premise of the franchise. It's supposed to be a utopian future based around science and exploration, not some gritty action thriller.

The original fascists ended up with all the wrong answers but they at least were asking questions about how to deal with a world that had changed utterly and rapidly. The modern ones are just "things have changed and I don't like it."
