DONT LISTEN TO THIS FUCKER.

SECTION230 PROTECTS THE INTERNET AND PRIVACY AS A WHOLE. ABOLISHING IT OR EVEN REPEALING SECTION 230 IS BAD FOR THE INTERNET AND THE PEOPLE. SPEAK UP.

Sen. WHITEHOUSE: We finally are moving to file a bipartisan Section 230 repeal bill. Waiting any longer serves no useful purpose.

This is, uh, not a smart move. Section 230 has its flaws, but repealing it without having an *extremely solid* plan in place to replace the protections for free speech it offers is tantamount to banning the LGBTQ+ community and others from public online spaces.

Yeah I’m pretty sure it’s from the hearing Onyx is talking about here. It would be good to read this since a lot of people don’t have context at the moment.
#savespeech #stopKOSA

Today, I also come bearing notes from the Judiciary Committee hearing on "online child safety."

+ THE GOOD:
- No vote on any legislation.
- Anger on KOSA in the House being defanged.
- A few new bills, two of them seem ok:
+ the (ECHO) Act
+ the Stop Sextortion Act

Update: this appears to have been from three days ago and the bill has yet to be introduced. Folks, this bill may have died before introduction.
The hearing this clip is from is from like the 9th anyway. Although I’d have to check with someone who saw that hearing

And if anything changes in the House it has to go back to the Senate.

The chances this happens before the midterms (when the Congress ends and the bill has to be re-introduced) are almost none.

Even if it did, it would need to be given a subcommittee, have hearings, go through a markup, voted up to the full committee, go through the process again, voted to the full Senate, go through markup again and then passed.

Whereupon it will be sent to the House to repeat the entire process.

Now, before everybody panics and runs around like headless chickens, they have yet to introduce the bill, and Graham and Whitehouse have tried to pass this before and failed. The previous versions have never made it past the introduction stage.

Individual bills may fail but these legislators want to present the appearance of a unified push against sec 230/privacy rights

Its worth keeping perspective that not every bill is The End, but everytime they start yapping i think we do need to do our own yapping to counter their narrative!

I think the way a lot of federal reps keep blustering about how section 230 and encryption rights needs repealing is dangerous even if an individual bill is basically dead in the water, because they want to manufacture a consensus around the issue

Its really important imo for citizens to push back when some senator starts mouthing off about how section 230 needs repealing, or other blatantly bad ideas

But its also good to have perspective re: the actual chances of a particular gambit going through!

your representatives. Tell them no to KOSA, no to the SCREEN Act and no to changing Section 230. We cannot have these ID requirements and censorship laws. This is worse than the Patriot Act, it’s the most draconian anti-speech law since the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798.

While it's still important to call your reps to make sure Section 230 is protected and censorship bills like KOSA are killed, there are silver linings.

These ideas they're pushing are way too chaotic and unpopular, and they can fall apart. We keep fighting and we don't give up. That's how we win.

By the by, both Oregon senators almost never have a real person pick up are mostly a message box so if you're got phone anxiety they are REALLY EASY to call. PLEASE CALL THEM. Ask them to protect Section 230 and oppose Kosa. ESPECIALLY SUZANNE who keeps giving me a canned email response about it.

I called my congressional representatives and told them to protect section 230, and to vote no on KOSA and all other internet censorship bills.

You should do the same!!!
You need to contact your representative and demand that Section 230 be protected, not repealed, NOW.

#SaveSpeech again call and email your reps to protect section 230, we cannot lose this
keep the internet anonymous, call your reps and tell em FUCK NO!!!!
Repealing Section 230 would chill free speech by allowing platforms, not users, to be held responsible for what its users say. Platforms will become much more censorious over what its users can post. This is extremely bad
They're trying to rush it. Call your reps, don't let them
