As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
• Figure out a small way to help someone
• Figure out a small way to fight back
• Figure out a small place to find joy
• Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

ok listen. i know no big platform is actually "safe" atm. Bluesky is run by shitheads, this place sucks too.

that being said, i need to fucking implore you, Twitter's unsafety is on a whole other level. there's "not safe" and then there's the actual wolf's den.
Long story short, an actual Nazi doxxing ring. Enough people reported them that they went away for like 12 hours and then Elon personally brought them back. The site is dead. If you’re still on there, go lock your account right now
what even happened on the other site this time

A small victory! Chat Control has been tabled for now, but it can [and likely will] be brought up for vote again in December

In the meantime, EU citizens will need to continue pressuring their respective govts to oppose chat control

However, do so knowing that pressure WORKS.
Denmark has tabled next week's vote on Chat Control.

Yet, per Peter Hummelgaard:

"The Danish Presidency will, however, continue to work with the member states to find a solution, and therefore negotiations on the technical details of the proposal continue. It is urgent to find common ground."

According to @fightchatcontrol.bsky.social the vote for Chat Control, which was supposed to be today, has been tabled by Denmark.

But does mention that there is another vote in December and to stay vigilant. After all, there are still multiple countries in favour, so keep saying you don't want it!

Here I am, at The Verge, on how Internet censorship stands to cut closeted trans people off from their only safe spaces.
For many trans people, internet anonymity is only a temporary way station between the closet and living full time in their desired gender. What happens when that privacy is gone?

Comment period ends Oct 20 and the comments so far OVERWHELMINGLY favor adding checkpoints for voter registration. please if you have a moment go in and comment that adding barriers to registration only contributes to voter suppression, and that noncitizens already can’t vote.
Have you commented yet? Follow the link and click on the button that says "Comment."
The Election Assistance Commission is considering requiring us to show passports or other proof of citizenship when registering to vote using the federal voter registration form.

If you're like me and you are struggling to contact your senators re: KOSA via their phone lines this week, I recommend attempting to send physical letters or emails in the meantime.

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [LOCATION]
I'm messaging to demand [SENATOR] oppose S. 1748, the Kids Online Safety Act, also known as KOSA. This broad legislation does not protect anyone and instead will be used to block any speech that the Trump administration’s partisan FTC disagrees with. It pushes the “duty of care” onto websites and social media platforms to remove content that is “harmful to children”. It would lead to overcompliance, mass censorship, and remove access to crucial information re: everything from mental health, LGBT topics, substance abuse, eating disorders and more.
Additionally, while large, corporate platforms like X can shoulder the weight of “duty of care”, smaller websites cannot, leading to greater and greater concentrations of power online into giant corporate platforms rather than small and medium sized businesses.
KOSA will not make kids safer. It will make the internet more dangerous for anyone who relies on it to learn, connect, or speak freely. Lawmakers should reject it, and fast.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
IF SENATOR COSPONSORED KOSA: Additionally, I want to remark on [SENATOR]’s cosponsorship of this bill. I think it is shameful that [SENATOR] has backed a bill as transparently bad as KOSA. This will not keep kids safe, it is an excuse to censor the free and open internet. I will not be voting for nor donating to [SENATOR] in any future campaigns if they do not drop their co-sponsorship of this bill, and I will encourage everyone in my life to do the same.
Do the right thing.
I think it's because of the backlash from last year, idk if the backlash is big enough as it was last year for it to failed

If anyone wants to feel less terrible about this, it failed with 64 cosponsors last time, and that was with less attention on it.
im writing them an email rn

AB 1043 does not apply to websites, meaning the technology is not currently available to adult sites who wish to block minors. While there is inherent privacy risk in all AV solutions, device-based solutions are more privacy preserving than the platform-based verification mandated in other states.
California just became the latest state to require device-level age verification. Under AB 1043, users must verify their age when setting up a phone or downloading apps, forcing Apple & Google to build age-check systems into devices.
