Thank you, @elongreen.bsky.social. It’s one I am especially proud of.

Because I mentioned this during a phone call today, I ought to share my favorite essay, which is by @alexanderchee.bsky.social. longreads.com/2015/06/18/m...

A Fistful of Dollars is one of the most influential films of all time, particularly in its depiction of violence. However, it's often credited with innovating a specific way of filming gun violence that it didn't pioneer at all.

50 years ago was 1975. That was not only five years after *two* movies featured a trans character (as a villain or as an antihero); that was around twenty years after Christine Jorgensen became a celebrity. (For that matter, she had a biopic in 1970, as well)
says no one knew about transgenderism 50 years ago

This movie could do with a bit more grit; even the dirt streaks feel aesthetic here. But it’s quite a bit better than either the 1985 movie or the CONAN reboot to which this was supposed to be a spinoff at one point.
Since I did the new DEATHSTALKER, I might as well do the new RED SONJA.

I’m thrilled that Dick Van Dyke made it to 100 years old, and I also find it hilarious that he’s apparently too old to play with LEGO. Him specifically.😆

Actually, I’ve got an example: the Emily Dickinson movie A QUIET PASSION, a bad movie that inexplicably gets praise.
It’s remarkable how the actors here make such idiosyncratic dialogue sound so natural when actors in other shows (no real example) struggle with more conventional 19th C dialogue.

And now HOUSE OF ASHUR. I had my doubts, but this show is holding up.

FALLOUT is back! I generally liked the first season, so I’m looking forward to this.

I had a prof give me this advice my first year of grad school and it stuck with me so much I give it to every student now.
Yeah I don’t imagine studying Roman military history is any less employable than any other history PhD.

I’ll repeat my standard advice to anyone considering a PhD: would you still want it if you knew, with absolute certainty, that you would not find a job in your field? If not, don’t get one.
This is 100% incorrect as the explanation for why someone obsessed with Roman *military* history is not being hired.

Occasionally I find myself revisiting BLACK ON BOTH SIDES and am once again floored by how good it is.

It’s not good, but I can’t help but admire a movie that in 2025 feels so very handmade.
There’s a DEATHSTALKER remake! Those are some terrible movies, so of course I’m going to watch this one.

this is true and, by my lights, Wake Up Dead Man is the first entry in this franchise where you could say Blanc has any sort of character arc. he’s still not the “main character,” but he is a *slightly* different person by the end of the movie. good stuff.
my favorite thing about the benoit blanc movies is that they aren't really about benoit blanc. he is not grappling with demons from his past. we are not getting flashbacks to the husband whose murder he never solved. he just shows up and does his job like mary poppins for homicides

Johnson says he’s been digging deep into Golden Age detective fiction, so if he sends Blanc to a small New England town to investigate a murder in the founding family, you know who to call.
