We shouldn't call it Artificial Intelligence. We still don't understand a lot about human brain/intelligence. A better term might be Artificial Thinking. Intelligence isn't just processing knowledge but also incorporating lived experience, feeling and emotion. Concepts where machines are excluded

It says a lot about the world that "it makes life better for everyone" isn't a very good answer for many people, and requires further explanation to be applicable to them.

For those people, I usually go into the "Why do you think money exists?" discussion.

As a theoretical cosmologist, I'm frequently asked "what is the benefit of the work you're doing for people's lives?" Nothing I work on makes money or cures disease.

There are a few different answers one can give, at various levels of "convincing" / "actually relevant to why the work is done."
