Going for a "tiny publisher" definition of indie, it was this near forgotten RPG.

Incidentally, I'm still trying to track down a copy if anyone's selling. (The creator became a born again Christian so won't distribute it because horror and spiritualism).

Makes me think: When I can find spoons and time, so badly want to go back over a bunch of Usenet (and mailing lists and ancient/original rpg net & other early forums) from back then. So many "forgotten" good discussions and game ideas still relevant today (and so much context/roots for discourse).

I started with World of Darkness, so technically I knew about that world from the start. But when it came to my paradigm shift, Risus (followed shortly by Wushu Open) blew the lid off of the way I thought about RPGs.

Once we worked out that you could basically throw out the rules, approach any of your friends in the middle of the day and say, “Hello, citizen, are you happy today?” and still get a passable game of Paranoia, all bets were off

It was typed, Xeroxed and clearly ring-bound by hand. If he could do that so could I. And I had to. Though it contained a whole fully functioning world and a whole new approach to experience, it only contained about half of an innovative (though misguided) game.

The B&W cover of the first hand produced version of Superhero. A bunch of heroes looking surprisingly Marvel-Esque gathered around a table, so playing a board game other watching. A figure looking like Dr Strange is passing the background and zapping the hands and dice of a player who look like Scarlet Witch

You sit down for a game you think is about one thing (dungeon crawling, silly heists, sci-fi action) and then suddenly out of nowhere, the table goes quiet. The mechanics and flow produced a genuinely poignant or heartfelt moment.

ok this is embarrassing but I used to have the "all rpgs are D&D or failures" perspective and then I read the first edition of the Chronicles of Darkness (then called the new World of Darkness) blue book + Inferno and Second Sight, both of which led me into Changeling the Lost and the rest, well...

Hitting this tangent, I have to DQ the only game/company to provide a serious rival to the dominant position of D&D. For a short window, Vampire was steadily displacing D&D as the entry point and TSR was on critical life support. Then WW made many bad decisions, Wizards jumped in, and here we are.

dogs in the vineyard, i picked it up on a whim and just. each page seemed to have a new perspective that kicked the tottering edifice erected by a lifetime of d&d a little farther over until "say yes or roll the dice" brought it crashing down.
