Yeah I think the party is overall better IX but no one measures up to Dana and Laxia who are pretty easily my favorite characters in the series

The defense stuff is optional in VIII but a major part of the story in IX, it's just a weird reuse that I think drags the game length out a bit especially since I think it's outstayed it's welcome after one game
