if there is any situation where the state says I can't say or do something which I would be allowed to do if I had a sincere religious belief related to it, then the state is interfering with my free exercise of religion, because it is taking away my choice to decide what counts as religion
but why doesn't the phologiston lover have just as much claim their belief is a religious one? to protect 'religious beliefs', the state has to take a stance on what things count as religion and what don't - establishing what is and isn't 'church'. this is still establishment of religion!

writing "god made men and woman, end of story" in a class about gender should get the same treatment as someone whose work in a physics or materials science class depends on the existence of phlogiston - you're rejecting the basic premises of a field, so you don't get a good grade in that subject

am I right to read the language used by the second instructor in the manufactured OU 'controversy'—"This paper should not be considered as a completion of the assignment" as a potential opening for the student to submit another essay that might be able to get a passing grade?

obviously Hegseth must receive the harshest punishments, but the commanding officers who followed his transparently illegal orders should be prosecuted too!

in the past few days I've seen exhortations to use libraries and to patronize bookstores that were framed as condemnations of 'piracy'. do people understand that participating in file-sharing doesn't actually preclude using either libraries or bookstores

I won't dismiss the possibility that Karoline didn't know this would happen, but the careful wording around the son makes me concerned ice did her and her brother a solid and got rid of the kid's mom.
"A woman with a family connection to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has been arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Revere, Massachusetts."

I'm sure many others have made this point before, but it occurs to me that one reason 'radical' feminists so easily fall into alliances with religious conservatives is that they both proceed from the premise that men are inherently sinful, so women must be protected from them as a class
This alliance has been around for a quarter century, at least. Self- identified "radical feminists" ARE often conservative. They've come together with religious groups to support the Iraq war, Palermo Protocols, TVPA...

Reminder that according to growth forecasts by serious people (2.6x per year), training frontier AI models will equal the entire peak demand of the US power grid (759,000 MW) by 2035. By 2048, that means it will equal more than all the solar energy hitting the earth continuously (173,000 terawatts)

realized there's likely to be a depressing side effect of AI summaries in Google search drastically cutting down on web traffic and attendant ad revenues: podcasts and short form video becoming even more predominant forms because they're the last place advertisers believe they actually get attention
