Anything really, I need work
Anyone know any tips to help alleviate sciatic pain overnight? It's pretty severe. My partner is already on meds for it, but overnight is 9/10 levels of pain, and manageable during the day.

We would like to sleep.

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Spent a week making a four-paddle pong clone earlier this year, as a mini-game prototype for Retromancer, a VN about an FCC agent investigating anomalous arcade cabinets in the 1970s. #gameDev #devLog

It's single player. You can play it here. sgdf.bearblog.dev/kerplonk/

Kerplonk is a four-paddle ball and paddle game played by a single player. Eliminate the other paddles to win.

Black-Friday anti-sale. Normally many of my games are free, today you can pay $4.99 for them.

Proceeds go to buying me more time to find a job before I lose everything.

My worst thanksgiving I was couch surfing and my generous hosts were heading elsewhere for the holiday. I didn't have anywhere to go, so I ended up alone eating saltines and ketchup packets.

My 20s were a weird time.

Today I am thankful that my partner's spinal surgery went well and that she is recovering.

I am grateful for the patreon supporter who upped their pledge to $50/month to help us get by until I find work.

I'm thankful for anyone who has played one of my games or read one of my books and reviewed it

The history of the video game industry is tied to economic hardship. Arcades - the kind with electromechanical entertainments and peep shows - took off in the 30s as cheap entertainment for the masses. Video game arcades provided something similar during the 70s hyper-inflation.

If you're really "excited about AI" then you should probably not talk about it here, where the community is predominantly made up of people who are being stolen from by AI and people whose future is being destroyed by AI.

After months of searching I've found a good solution to getting #c64 BASIC games running in a blog post right in your browser, thanks to floooh's tiny 8-bit emulators. This will enable me to feature C64-specific programs on by #BASIC code blog.

Trying to remain positive, but I'm starting to think I'm not going to make it, friends. I've been writing pro since 2011, freelance and solo game dev since 2017... but I don't have any AAA experience, and indies aren't hiring in this economy.

2 months to find a steady income, and I'm out of ideas.

About halfway through the Children of Time trilogy by Adrian Tchaikovsky and wow...this is some of the best sci-fi I've read in years.

Nice, hard science, good character development, cool ideas, stretches your brain a bit, few McGuffins, and well thought out. Pulls few punches.

Always worth taking a moment to remind you if you’re pirating authors’ book you’re a shitty person. You can rail that our profession isn’t a profession all you want. You can paint yourself as an online revolutionary liberating ideas. It’s all bullshit.

You’re just a shitty person who hates writers.

You know I'm fucked when my fallback from solo game dev is "write another novel." This job market is killing me - if I can't find a day job, I need a solid way to generate income without one.

Out of curiosity, do I have any followers who are familiar enough with Applesoft BASIC to be able to understand an odd bit of NPC behavior that's likely determined by a combination of hidden dice roles and dialogue choices?

I want to do *something* with C64 BASIC... but I don't have a good javascript emulator that will autoload a C64 BASIC program and run in a browser. I wouldn't be able to share my output, and that saps my enthusiasm. #retroComputing
