true, I was thinking of general limitations of DSIs reached at approximately Mach 2.0, has indeed nothing to do with the F-35.
Very cool thread, big thanks!
A cheesy question now. How does the F-35 manage to achieve sufficient air compression at Mach 2.0 with the elegant but boring diverterless supersonic inlets (DSI)? Is the inlet volume expanding very much behind the cabin to compensate?

Spike inlets, the TsAGI way.
Soviet vs. Western designs🧵

One of the most common design of air inlet used on supersonic aircraft is the axisymmetric diffuser with external compression, which is just a fancy way of describing the spike/cone inlets of the: Mikoyan & Gurevich SM-12/12PM/12PMU, Ye-3U...

Variable-Sweep Wing Structural Alloys🧵
Past, Present & Future

Given my interest in variable-sweep (V-S) wing combat aircraft, for the past few years I have wondered if & by how much has materials science & technology advanced since the mid 60s to mid 70s (the heyday for wing designs).

The F-14's Wing Center Section🧵

The F-14’s Wing Center Section (WCS) is made of Ti-6Al-4V α–β titanium alloy in the annealed state (UTS ≈ 896 MPa), probably the most commonly used titanium alloy in the aerospace industry. The structure assembled by electron-beam welding (EBW).
Highly interesting threads, especially for engineers of the field. Thank you for the work! Some interesting design concepts of the past are often forgotten.

President Stubb:

Power politics is back, spheres of interest is back, Russian imperialism is not gone, so start adjusting.

Right now we're living in a 1918, 1945, or 1989 moment in world history. And now we're in a similar situation. We just don't know where the world is going to go.
Sounds bad, but less bad than what the Iraqis and Egyptians experienced. It seems only very few "loyal" Warsaw Pact countries got a better treatment and Syria in some rare ocassions.
"Made it?" By what terms is this a success? No payload delivered, no recovery of any of the parts...just detonations again, so basically a failure in all chapters. Another exploding rocket on the sea is a success? we are two decades away from any usefuless of this.

Internal fuel volume/Aircraft empty weight.
[Litres/Kilograms]

For Soviet aircraft, fuel volume is total. For US ones, its usable (total-trapped). Empty weight includes oil, oxygen, other consumables (for US aircraft, trapped fuel too). Configurations include the internal guns.

MiG-23 turn rate🧵

One important fighter aircraft performance parameter, for close range air combat, is turn rate [ω, measured in °/s].

I will be comparing the maximum sustained & instantaneous turning ability of the MiG-23, with that of other contemporary fighters.

Why am I so unimpressed by these strikes? Israel and the US have failed to target significant elements of Iran's nuclear materials and production infrastructure. RISING LION and MIDNIGHT HAMMER are tactically brilliant, but may turn out to be strategic failures. 🧵 1/17
