FYI, The Light Chasers, the sci fi musical that @jesshutchinson.bsky.social and I made based on the album Light Chasers by Cloud Cult is still available as Video on Demand!

It's a photo from the stage production of The Light Chasers! No spoilers, but the cast is in jump suits, looking on as a young woman seems to have just crossed through a homemade stargate!

I am sitting on new jersey transit, and just heard a dude looking at his phone two rows ahead of me ask, "Who's Bari Weiss?"

Everytime I get an upgrade to delta one I both revel in it and want a sign that says "I work in the theatre, I didn't pay for this."

Aww balls!

So sad to hear that Drew Struzan has passed. I think like most peeps from my generation we were all familiar with his art work. Like I had about 4 posters of his work on my walls growing up.

Anyway lets fill our TL with his amazing work, spread the love of his magical work.

I remember so many phone numbers from the 80s and 90s that are no longer relevant and/or functional:

My friend since the 3rd grade!
(his parents may still have this landline)
My grandparents!
My first dorm room?!

...and more!

I hope it's just as magical.

I hope it launches someone elses career.

I hope it gives someone else exactly what they need at just the right moment.

Children's Theatre just opened up a new $50 million+ remodel of the Emery Theatre in Cincinnati, replete with a video wall backdrop, projection mapping throughout the theatre, turntables, stagelifts.

That's a long way from the rack of 48 dimmers I had to light my first show at the Taft.

It was hard, but it was fun, and we always pushed against what was possible because it felt like it mattered.

Yesterday, I had a conversation with Rob Junk (of stage junk and the Ultimate Focus Tool fame), who was master electrician with the Taft Theatre, where Children's Theatre performed, for over a decade. We talked about the magic we made with so little equipment for so many kids.

I became resident designer at the Children's Theatre for the next 7ish years, 4 shows/year.

I've designed 34 shows there over the last 20 years.

More people have seen my design work with the Children's Theatre than any other shows I've done.

(I think it might be 500,000+ people).

On a whim, I looked him up on social media a couple years ago, and was delighted to find that he's an illustrator/graphic designer working in Detroit.

He wanted to draw comic books. He didn't know how he was gonna make that happen. But the first step was to finish high school asap.

There was one kid in particular I had a lot of conversations with. He was working late nights at an AMC then getting to school earlier than everyone else each morning. He also had a kid on the way.

There was some neighborhood conflict he was entangled in with a bunch of the other students.

I felt a little guilty, and some of the kids were pretty sad that I was leaving before the end of the semester. (As I recall, I basically left at Thanksgiving)

After about six weeks, I got a call from Children's Theatre of Cincinnati offering me a gig that December (I had lit a show for them the previous year while I was in grad school.)

I took the gig.

I quit the school job.

Another day the internet was out, and none of the kids could make progress.

Another day the "intro to personal finance" teacher didn't show up, and I had to sit in the class for an hour and I listened to kids be very wrong about how credit cards function. They did not want conflicting info.

One day at the school we went into lockdown because a kid, unhappy about a grade, had left and announced he was going home to get a gun and "shoot some motherfucking teachers."

There was no shooting. I think he was arrested? He might have already been at the school on a court order.

She had a desk and a computer, so she spent the day doing homework for classes toward a masters degree. But apparently that looked enough like logging grades that it was fine.

I just had a bare table, whatever book I had brought, and a notebook.

I kept reading.

On a lot of days, the need for help was sporadic at best, so I read many books.

At one point, my supervisory teacher told me that I needed to stop reading or the administration would see that I didn't have enough work and fire me.

After my phone calls were done, I sat at a table near the kids, and functionally did the same job as the full teachers.

I was closer in age to the students than the teachers, so I was also someone else for them to talk to.

Most of the core classes were on computers, so kids sat at a terminal, slowly (or quickly) making their way through their coursework. There were a couple kids in my section trying to finish high school a year early.

The teachers sat at desks, occasionally walked the rows, answered questions.

It was vitally important to the school to get those students into class for the first head count day, because then the school would be paid half the per student funding even if they never showed up again.

For the first couple weeks, my main job was to call the phone numbers on file for students who were currently enrolled, or had been enrolled the previous year, but hadn't shown up. These were mostly land lines. I talked to a lot of family members, and got a lot of disconnected lines.
