Written by, and Copyright (c) September 2025 Eric Montgomery (All Rights Reserved) On the hottest afternoon of the year, she ducked into the small corner shop where the air shimmered above the freezers. Bent over the cooler, a man debated between lemon soda and iced tea. Their carts collided in the narrow aisle, setting off a startled laugh. Something electric passed between them, small but undeniable, and not just from the static in the air. They kept talking, about nothing important really, and the heat outside made their banter feel urgent, almost too close. A passionate debate about which frozen dessert was best ended with them tossing both choices into her basket and heading for the checkout. When she finally stepped back onto the sidewalk, the sun blazing again, she let out a sigh that felt like both relief and anticipation.
