I could not agree more. Austerity is toxic to left coalitions because we rely on community and solidarity, which is hard to form if we're in cut throat competition with each other. tonemadison.com/articles/unl...

Credit where credit is due. The Democrats' message that the GOP shut down the government because they want to throw millions of people off healthcare has broken through. Two of my cousins who are NOT AT ALL tuned into national politics told me that this is why the government is shut down.

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.
