For someone (like me) still holding on to some concepts from The Forge in the 00s, that's a very refreshing take
This article (by @lumpley.bsky.social) on Conflict Resolution & Task Resolution (and other kinds!) is SO GOOD.
I just read it and have to share!

If you're a #gamemaster or #gamedesigner in the #ttrpg space, do not miss out on this concept:

RuneQuest and the world of Glorantha have had many highs and lows. After flying high in the 1970s, it looked like the 1980s might be even better thanks to a business deal. But in some ways, the game would never recover.

Explorateur #2 is live and in your inbox. It's a curation of links for #ttrpg designers. November was packed with sharp writing, ideas, and theory, so it was hard to leave anything out.

I'll share some of the highlights here on BlueSky...

For ages I've been trying to come up with a bulk transport/trading rules. I did try to build on Traveller/Mercator rules, and on UVG and I'm still unhappy with the results

What's a general idea for that city Hex Flowers?
I do love Hex Flowers for things that I expect to change gradually, so I'm wondering what you are cooking up :D

I think my disagreement stems from the idea that it’s not a single playstyle anymore. I’m not sure it ever was, because there have always been different understandings of its core tenets, pillars, or principles. But those interpretations were definitely much closer to each other than they are now

I might need to start a blog just to explain that one thing :D

To clarify: When I hear or see OSR, I more and more often don’t know what someone means. I usually figure it out from context, but not always. If it’s someone I know and follow (game materials, blogs, or podcasts), it’s clear. But from a random person on Reddit, socials, or a convention? Much harder

I got into OSR shortly after one of the releases of Swords & Wizardry (I think around 2008), and the space has changed a lot since then—especially post-G+. To me, the term has lost much of its meaning (if it was ever more than marketing) as an umbrella for everything it now tries to encompass
December 1, 2024 at 12:38 AM
Oh, cool. I never thought about it, but it’s really handy to have a term for grouping games like Liminal Horror, Cthulhu Hack, and Cthulhu Dark (which I don’t think anyone would even call NSR, but DIY CoC fits)

A great post, worth reading for anyone who missed it, just like I did - even though I don’t really agree with the conclusion

It's a very beautiful book!

I rarely go for limited covers because I usually prefer the standard ones. But I did choose a limited cover for Into the Cess & Citadel. It’s really eye-catching!
November 30, 2024 at 11:03 PM
Is the cover brighter than the previous print, or is it just the lighting?

I didn’t have time lately to look through the stuff I’ve go, but here are some new(ish) #TTRPG releases that arrived for me in the last few weeks.

Not sure when I’ll have time to read them, though!

How Jennell Jacquays rocked the dungeon design world, continued from part 1. In part 1 we talked about some major premade dungeons that predate Thracia and what each added to the craft. Let's now move to how Thracia both combined and completely evolved these concepts.
Early this year, we lost Jennell Jacquays. To just say that she was a TTRPG and video game designer would be doing her contributions a disservice, but that was my main intersection with her legacy. I want talk about why, historically, her work was such a blessing to dungeon design🧵

A 25% tarif? That will increase the price of approximately 85% of all TTRPGs, and that's accounting for people switching to US printers.

The Wizard of Oz had the ideal D&D party composition:
• character whose entire personality is having a pet (human ranger)
• character that makes more sense in another setting (warforged fighter)
• a furry (tabaxi bard)
• character who wanted to play as a monster (scarecrow)
