If a publisher can’t market their books without relying on authors matching their efforts, they’re not very good at Publishing.

Sorry, not sorry.

Marketing books is hard — but don’t blame authors.

I get really annoyed whenever I see marketing done wrong, and few industries get it wrong as consistently as book publishing.

Insightful episode, esp for trade publishers and self-pub authors with limited marketing experience.

Most niche pubs will nod in agreement with McKee's "know your reader" fundamentals, and Biel's acknowledgement that your connection to readers will change over time. It's an ongoing process.

I remember the Kindle thing being a tough debate driven by wanting to serve patrons while recognizing the potential downsides. I hope everyone's now realized Amazon has zero good intentions re: libraries, and that sometimes patrons need to be educated about why libraries make hard decisions.

I’m glad there’s empirical evidence for this because most teachers can see this happening in real time. We’re losing even more of the human connectedness and empathy building that is an essential part of the educational experience for children.

They've made it so easy now. It seemed a lot more complicated when I first looked into it a couple of months ago, but without a custom domain, it takes 5 minutes to set it up, and then a little while longer to move everything over. You have a lot of posts, so I'd wait until the end of the day.

As did they! It's one of the reasons I ultimately migrated rather than bailing on this place outright, because they're focused on equitable solutions rather than fake neutrality.

It's a variation of the Twitter and Substack problem, staying somewhere that doesn't align with your values. In this case, BlackSky built alternatives that avoid the usual compromises, even one-upping Mastodon by migrating all of your posts and media.

I also have a custom domain and the DID worked for me. The tektite process was smooth from there and I'm now officially on BlackSky! Maybe I'll start spending a little more time here now...

First, you're supposed to disable two factor authorization if you have it enabled.

Second, I used the tektite.cc migration tool. But it didn't work with my username. I had to use my DID, which is a unique number assigned to your account. You can find your DID at clearsky.app.
