that's me, in the late 90s.

I love the cold dark clutch of grey sullen Chicago winter
Apparently, we're in the top 0.5% of listeners to #Dessa on Spotify which means I really ought to be able to sing Warsaw at karaoke.

A critical thing to understand about "legal financial obligations" & "financial sentencing orders" (2 entirely cursed phrases BTW) is that the goal is not to punish or recoup costs from defendants. It's to extract resources from under resourced & neglected communities.

Anyone got a link to a good "talking points for contacting the Mayor & City Council about the budget"? from a nice progressive "CPD is stealing money from civilization, fund our fucking libraries" perspective?

If you want public health breakthroughs for cities, you need other traffic calming elements, too, like lots of bumpouts and raised crosswalks. Hoboken, NJ, went all in on this and HAS NOT HAD A TRAFFIC CRASH DEATH IN LIKE NINE YEARS. THERE'S YOUR PUBLIC HEALTH BREAKTHROUGH, BUDDY.

Budgets are a moral document, and right now the City of Chicago is showing it values surveillance over libraries.
The proposed Chicago city budget has a $5 million line item for a ShotSpotter replacement. Abandoning this failed pursuit would free up the funds needed to maintain 2025 funding levels at our city libraries, which would still leave the libraries underfunded but would avoid disastrous proposed cuts.

A haunting, urgent piece about a woman who counts the number of women murdered by men in the US and how profound an exercise it is.

My wife has been HIV+ for 34 years. She’s alive today b/c work of activists who destigmatized the virus, pushed medical science to adapt & find ways to treat it, & advocated for gov health programs that helped fund her care. The current U.S. regime may want to go back in time, but we won’t let them.

An organization that I have not given to in close to 30 years sent me an EOY/GT solicitation last week. I did not mind, but I did not renew my giving.

They have sent 2-4 more every day since. So I have blocked the sender.

Don't do that.

Today is World AIDS Day. Designated in 1988. it's a day to remember & honor the 32 million people who have died worldwide from AIDS to remain united in the fight against HIV.

The first Visual AIDS / Day Without Art in 1989 may not have radicalized me, but it was my first protest.

Wards should be geographic local subdivisions for city services with no legislative function and aldermen should represent population-based districts with no executive function

one THOUSAND percent.

I mean, I know we're all masses of contradictions, but not fucking trying to claim a piece of the public road is a very low bar to clear to demonstrate you understand you live in a neighborhood, with other human beings, in a society.
Dibs is antisocial behavior and I find posts characterizing it as a cute regional traditional both annoying and disappointing.

I know Chicago as a city that shows up for each other so why y'all refusing to help out when we're all going through this weather together

Stopped into our lovely neighborhood wine shop. The everyday bubbles (a cava) we buy there, as well as our beloved Noilly Prat Original Dry, are victims of the MAGA trade war.

I know that the GOP cultists don't actually care about small businesses like hers, but I hate having it confirmed.

Today's architecture column. In an ironic twist, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks next month will weigh granting preliminary landmark status for 30 N. LaSalle St., the nondescript building for which Louis Sullivan’s masterpiece, the Chicago Stock Exchange Building, was sacrificed in 1972.

I got mostly As & Bs which matching my giving. Which is interesting because my professional work is mostly C.
Feeling grateful and want to share the love?

Everything is hard but don't worry: @aroguemonster.bsky.social & I made a fun easy quiz to help you learn more about how to find great orgs doing great work that tap into your interests and motivations as a donor.

It's also FUN.
Unsure of what organizations you should be donating to this #GivingTuesday? Wish there was a quiz that could help you parse your priorities?
