those are ounces for the alcohols. Also you need to split the bean when you throw it in the pot and you should smash the cinnamons into small bits before you add them to the pot. the orange blossom flowers are totally optional.

1. This is a cool local business selling original designs.

2. Proceeds go to a good cause.

3. This makes me wonder if Abolish ICE will finally make a serious run in the city’s snowplow naming contest this year.

I've got US flag patches on my #Resist t-shirt. But cosplaying patriotism won't save anyone!

I do think nation-states are a 20th century framework that we should be figuring out how to move beyond. But that's an even longer haul than replacing courts & policing, & completely beyond me.

To make the syrup, combine this in a pan:
1 cup water to 1 cup of white and light brown sugar
1 vanilla bean
1/2 ounce of cinnamon sticks
1/4 ounce of orange blossom flowers

bring to boil, simmer 5 minutes, let steep at least 5 hours, bottle & refrigerate it.

Last night I debuted my apple blossom old fashioned:
1.5 bourbon
.5 Laird's Applejack
.5 cinnamon vanilla simple syrup
.25 overproof bourbon
Bitter Truth aromatic bitters

You can garnish with apple slices, caramels, or an nilla wafer. You can top it with dry apple cider.

Sarah Taber's video today is about ICE raids, prison labor and farm labor. And how it's not as simple as "Americans don't want to do hard work". H-2A visas, the power in being an itinerant worker, admin lowering minimum wages for H-2A visas, trafficking & abuse of H-2A workers.

all the transit advocates cheering on the ever expanding surveillance state … this ain’t it y’all

Starting October 15, six CTA buses will operate with Automated Bus Lane Enforcement systems as part of the City of Chicago’s Smart Streets pilot.
Automated bus lane, bus stop, and bike lane enforcement starts Wednesday, October 15th Keeping bus stops clear is essential to ensuring that transit is accessible to everyone especially people with disabilities. Bus lanes and bus stops are for buses. Bike lanes are for bikes.
Keeping them clear is essential to ensuring everyone in Chicago gets where they need to go, safely and on time. That's why we're launching automated bus lane, bus stop, and bike lane enforcement to improve rider safety and transit efficiency.

"lots of functional substitutes"??

Only in the same way that there are "lots of functional substitutes" for a sunset or a mother's love.

Tariffs have rapidly increased the price of coffee—a drink with almost no nutritional value and lots of functional substitutes. Yet coffee may also be the one thing Americans can’t live without, @elcush.bsky.social writes:
The Drink That Americans Won’t Give Up Without a Fight
Coffee has almost no nutritional value and lots of substitutes. It’s also, apparently, too important to lose.

Just to hammer this home- there are no societal problems for tech to solve. We already solved then. We know how to do clean energy. We know how to cut emissions. We have the resources to feed and house everyone. We've shown UBI and univ. healthcare work.

We just need to care enough to DO all of it.

The greatest difference we could make to our future generations is not…any of the shit we hear people saying about tech.

It is learning how to care for each other enough to create and hold a real, lasting peace.

when i came back after law school, i shopped around cell phone dealers until i found one with a 312 phone number to assign me.

it's really more of a relay. Sometimes, you gotta hand the next leg to someone else entirely.

I still remember my grandmother's phone number.
BUT more importantly, I remember 7-digit dialing and having to switch over to 10-digit dialing.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I enjoy your company because you are always present, engaged and engaging.

Randos at IMDB really hate it but the acting and cinematography is much much too good to hate. Ultimately it's a goofy mad scientist movie that I enjoyed. although all the chills stop at about the middle.

I could not actually read the address on the package, but the neighbor who was carrying away the parcels for upstairs said it was not for our building.
lizzyisi.bsky.social
chased after the Amazon delivery person who had left a package at our building which was not for our building in my stocking feet, pyjama bottoms, and "future corpse" t-shirt, unbrushed hair & no bra.

So I'm that lady in the neighborhood.

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.
A photograph from the 1988 ACT UP demonstration outside the FDA. Many people are participating in a die-in on the front steps, holding mock tombstones with messages like "RIP - killed by the FDA" and "Dead from lack of drugs." A line of police officers (some with classic 80s mustaches) wearing riot helmets stands between them and the building; one cop wearing white gloves is walking through the demonstrators. Affixed to the 2nd story windows of the building is a series of posters and a large blank banner reading Silence = Death.

Police officers who publicly declare that they’ll quit if a mayoral candidate they dislike wins the election are bullies, laying the groundwork to manipulate the budget/oversight debates when that candidate wins
