Am I right in thinking there is no causal relationship between Brexit as a concept and that huge spike in migration other than it being a conscious choice by the government to maintain GDP by increasing the population?
listerthrawn.bsky.social
No, I think we should. But what do the government say? Brexit is shit but we promised to keep it to get elected so we're stuck with it?
listerthrawn.bsky.social
I think Brexit should be attacked, but they're in a position where they ruled out in the manifesto virtually all the big impact options on minimising the damage.

They've made it super hard on themselves to try and attack Brexit when they've ruled out doing anything about it.

You best hope I'm not wrong on everything... I broadly agree with every point in your digital ID blog post lol

Good writing!

Am I? What do you think my position was?
listerthrawn.bsky.social
We're too simple to understand the workings of such a great mind.
listerthrawn.bsky.social
Which is exactly my position. Limit the damage until it can be reversed.

Doesn't help the Chancellor with the budget though.

I hope so! Would be delighted to be wrong.

Well, his normal retort is that there's nothing wrong with Brexit it just wasn't done his way. Blames the Tories for being weak. Under him the EU will buckle and mighty Britain will rise from the ashes and lead the world once more.

His followers lap it up.

Well let's see what happens. I cant put my finger on where real opinion lies. I feel like I'm in 2 echo chambers. Bsky is self selected on hearing what I want, and Facebook which seems intent on showing me everything I don't.

What is the point of the initial post if not to stop trying to make brexit work and reverse it instead?
listerthrawn.bsky.social
No. He should definitely be attacked on it at every turn, and labour should have rejoin or customs union etc in their next manifesto. I want us back in the EU as much as anyone hence my pic being one I took at the second referendum march. But I don't want to blow that chance.
listerthrawn.bsky.social
No. Im advocating being aware of the world we're in rather than the one we wish to be.

I fear what the end result would be of Labour breaking a major manifesto commitment on Brexit at a time when Reform lead in the polls headed by the chief advocate of Brexit.

The leaders of brexit told everyone that though. And the papers. It doesn't matter if it happened (and I tend to believe there was a fair amount of it), but they believe it did.

Dead people must be filling my Facebook feed with "Brexit Betrayal" every time a Belgian catches a fish then.

We going to do the whole "if you voted leave you're thick" thing again? How'd that play last time?
listerthrawn.bsky.social
We're cooked really. What would rejoin negotiations look like with the spectre of a Farage government in 4 years? EU likely to prefer we come back in 4 years to try it if we see him off. Labour pivoting to rejoin would boost Farage immeasurably too I fear.

It takes 5 minutes to Google the suffragettes and find out how it led to women's right to vote. And they think just stop oil is bad?

In fact... I'll save them 5 mins.

I've not heard him speak before. If you combine what he says with how he says it... how does anyone take him seriously? He makes grandpa Simpson sound erudite.

Of course it does, but it also attracts people who want to help their community. Being a priest or a scout leader also helps the community, but it also attracts people with certain tendencies right? It's just not as binary as you'd like to make out.
