Yo shoutout to everybody who followed me from AskHistorians. I'm Dallas and I'm a historian who works on the Holocaust and Axis war crimes. My main area of geographic specialization is modern Romania but I work on Germany quite a bit as well. I'm currently writing a book on the mistreatment of...

this game is an escort mission for the colts. they have to gain yardage in small chunks and wait for philip rivers to walk up to the line. every couple minutes he spits out some dialogue like "hurry – we have to reach the satellite uplink so we can deliver evidence of the ambassador's wrongdoing"

We occupy a very specific niche when it comes to the public discussion of history, and that niche is serious answers to the question of how bamboozled Hitler would have been by big chungus memes.

i think software engineers insisting that everyone needs to pick up LLM tooling as a part of their job are mostly showing the depth of their own ignorance with respect to how other professions work on the basis that inevitably they must be right in some marginal way about the adoption of technology.

A big part of being a historian is being a detective! Who did this? Why? Where? Why does it matter in the grand scheme of things? You have to learn how to probe, how to uncover, how to read against the grain, how to find unusual sources, how to interpret those sources. How to piece together a puzzle
It also robs students of learning *how* to research.

Coming back to this, I'm still struck by the implication that academics should care if the AI pushers "trust" all our work that's done without AI.

I don't know, man, you all seemed to trust our work enough to steal it from us wholesale.
I would struggle to trust an academic who doesn‘t know how to
use AI tools.
Which is not the same as not being critical.

Well, we’ll try to find a way to survive without your trust I guess. Enjoy the ChatBots

Amazing how many of these papers are about “ethical use of AI in education.” It’s harsh, I know, but I do think if you incorporate a hallucinated reference it should be incredibly damning for you. There should be professional penalties.
(Also, icyi, here are the 42 papers citing our non-existent paper which includes a "meta-analysis" - often called the evidence "gold standard" - of "LLM effects" in education 🤮

the 12-team playoff is a total waste, there were almost never even four championship-worthy teams, much less 12.

Yes, it’s illegal. Like changing it to Department of War, like ten thousand other things. Part of the Trump strategy is to break the law and convey “the rule of law is weak and feminine and laughable and should be overridden by Our Guy.” Trump is fundamentally anti-law.

anybody who's gone through the academic job search process in the last...twenty years? knows this is nonsense. it's a miracle if you even get an actual rejection email instead of getting ghosted, never mind being told why you weren't hired.
You’ll never guess who else experienced ‘racism’ on the job market despite their unimpeachable academic credentials.
