Well as I put it elsewhere, the answer is…theme parks.

The actual answer is: theme parks.

No, really: despite even Legacy underperforming in theaters, especially domestically (with the caveat it did much better in foreign markets), it actually did well in theme parks. The ElecTRONica night event at California Adventure outlasting the movie’s tenure.

Also, very fascinating you took time out of your day to quote a post I made nearly two weeks ago. You bored?

I love how me pointing out online American far-leftists who oppression Olympics Gaza over ICE raids somehow implicates me as being a fascist or a liberal, lol.

Also socialists I dunno about socialists being that clear-headed. See: being all for USAID getting dismantled. jacobin.com/2025/01/us-f...

...so anyways, I just saw One Battle After Another, which is pointedly a critique against performative far-left "revolutionary" politics. Which has pissed off large sections of the online far-left, guys like the one in the screenshot who thinks inflatable costumes aren't """revolutionary""" enough.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Ok, finally saw One Battle After Another...yeah I can see why the American far-right and far-left are both pissed off at this movie simultaneously, lol.

Still, if it's provoking that kind of reaction, I'd say it's own political theme is a huge success. Worth checking out for that.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Well no, since Universal’s able to justify keeping the Waterworld show open without a sequel, lol.

(And as a reminder of just how successful the show is, this year is its 20th Anniversary!)
lewcidgm.bsky.social
No, it deadass is because of the theme parks.

Pretty much. Especially since the theme parks’ revenue is waaaay more stable than movie theater revenue (doubly so in the post-lockdown environment).

Which isn’t new for Disney: see Cars as a franchise persisting due to merch sales, in spite of being considered Pixar’s weakest franchise.

Then the Lightcycle Coaster in Shanghai Disneyland, then Magic Kingdom at WDW, was also a huge success.

It’s one of those properties where the setting is more interesting than the story and characters. The kind of setting that’s perfect for theme parks but not movies. Kind of like Avatar as well.

I didn’t know I was whining about anything in the first place, LMAO
liberationnow.bsky.social
Okay then what are you whining about?
lewcidgm.bsky.social
No it wasn’t.

Economy was the main reason why Harris lost, not Gaza. In fact all signs point to it being a pretty low priority among American voters.

This is without going into the elephant in the room that is Dems dealing with a hostile media environment where all the big MSM players are owned by right-wing billionaires, aka the guys whose best interest in suppressing and Dem “message”.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Nah. I don’t engage with whataboutism bait.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Ah, so after I manage to prove leftists did dismiss P2025 as a scare tactic, immediately pivots to whataboutism-ing Gaza.

Typical.
liberationnow.bsky.social
You know what? I stand corrected. Some people did in fact dismiss Project 2025.

So why did Biden and Harris dismiss Gaza?
lewcidgm.bsky.social
I got more if I'd like, but I think the point is made. And it's not very hard to look these up either if you're curious. And in case, I got Things to do and don't want to be up all day and night for this.

Although not every federal case that doesn't go Trump's way goes up to SCOTUS: for instance, the whole thing on him targeting law firms I don't think has gone up to them, and since then Trump's stopped trying to go after other firms.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
That's because they're leaning in a lot on EOs and federal funding cuts to push their agendas. Stuff that would get challenged in federal courts, but we have the catch of a hostile GOP majority SCOTUS willing to go "nah, it doesn't count when Trump does it".
lewcidgm.bsky.social
The base idea I found intriguing, but as more details started to come out, my personal skepticism started to ramp up: it being locked to a 3-day and 2-night stay, the packed and rigorous itinerary, and the hours-long “excursion” to GE…and how you’re *only* supposed to go to GE.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Well in JKR’s case, it doesn’t help that she doesn’t like sharing her work with other creators. She demands absolute creative control over everything.

It’s why there was never a proper HP Expanded Universe.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Then again I feel like a lot of the MCU’s detractors seem to not grasp it’s the characters that was what catapulted it to its success. The cinephile side of the MCU hatedom still get hung up on the color grading, the third act CGI, and the existence of quipping, but that’s a whole other convo.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
AC’s issues as a land comes down to how the appeal of the MCU isn’t really the setting (unlike with SW), but to the characters. Which, TBF, they have grasped this with how much they swap meet & greet characters to tie in with the latest MCU thing…too bad not every guest is into m&gs (like me!)
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Like, I could go on with this same weird overdeveloped/underdeveloped-ness that’s present in stuff like Avengers Campus or Tiana’s.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
…it’s locked to the contentious ST meaning no characters not from the PT or OT, aka the proven popular characters, and the “interactive elements” are games on the buggy Disney app that aren’t actually fun to play and don’t do much of anything.

A bunch of their recent stuff is like this.
lewcidgm.bsky.social
Like, take Galaxy’s Edge for example: it’s the usual of being a highly detailed immersive land, it’s a brand new planet in the SW canon, it ties within the period of the Sequel era, it’s supposed to be very interactive.

…and yet, the streetmosphere actors got caught making the land feel lifeless…
lewcidgm.bsky.social
That they start with a complex and intricate high concept that sounds good on paper and is technically present in the final result…but then when you scrutinize things further it becomes apparent how undercooked the final result is with a bunch of things don’t work as well as intended.
