So true! Do not expect wealth creation, prosperity or competitiveness if decisions are not climate proof.
Prof Stern and @dpcarrington.bsky.social on a very timely message.
Worth reading, specially by all those looking for excuses to delay climate action.

There's an excellent exhibit in the @nationalgalleryirl.bsky.social of words and phrases in Irish for fauna, Tails from the Archive. I think Manchán would have appreciated it.

MDH prediction from 2023:

“You know, in a couple of years’ time people will be able to resolve this issue themselves, in relation to whether they want a silent person, a puppet, or whether they want a president.”

Today IUCN has officially declared the Slender-billed Curlew extinct, marking the first known global extinction of a formerly widespread migratory bird species whose range included mainland Europe, North Africa, and West Asia.

Far too often, scrub/brush is treated as a nuisance, hazard, or eyesore, when in fact it is vital habitat and a key component of natural succession.

For years, this was part of a path through the land, but it's now an impenetrable tangle of gorse and young trees.

As the trees grow, the gorse and other vegetation will be shaded out, and I'll be able to pass again, but through *rainforest*.

Scrub is how natural forest ecosystems form.

The average age of moving out of home varies widely across Europe. These differences are partly cultural and partly financial in nature. I for one am keen to kick my beloved children out of home by say 20. They are still very young but one must have goals in life 😉 🥾

I read this with interest, as an Irish person who lives in France and has no vote in the presidential election. The question occurred to me. Why does Ireland actually need a president? Would the political system be any worse if the office did not exist?

Um, ICE just coldly shot an unarmed PRIEST in the head w a pepper ball when he (and everyone around him) clearly posed no threat.

For the crime of … complaining about government policy.

Not sure people realize how INSANELY DRAINING data centers will be on our planet.

If you imagine data centers as their own country, they'll rank fourth in global electricity use by 2035 — outranked only by China, India, and the U.S.

Read this in @bloomberg.com👇

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

“We are home now. We marched from the park to ICE, very peaceful crowd. We were standing around ICE pushed us down, sprayed us with chemical and I was hit in the head with a projectile. This was so unprovoked. People have to know that the Feds are attacking people with NO provocation whatsoever.”

It's true! When I studied economics, I was stunned by the ROI of social programs. Every dollar spent on childcare returns about $2.80 to the economy, and healthcare delivers even greater returns with broader social impact.

A universal basic income is simply smart fiscal policy. Why the reluctance?
brenttoderian.bsky.social
For every €1 provided through a Basic Income For Artists pilot program in Ireland, the government got €1.46 back. So it’s being made permanent.

Over and over we see it. It saves public money to provide public housing. And it makes public money to provide basic income.

We can’t afford to NOT do it.

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:
