Spokes have received complaints that the path has been narrowed, noting that it is not safe to pass by bicycle or wheelchair. I've attached some photos and a diagram of the site. Restrictions in width to just 77cm are present in 2 locations, whilst other locations require wheeling on muddy grass. Site welfare facilities have been placed occupying almost the full path width. A nearby lighting column means a pinch point is present, with site fencing seen to be damaged possibly from a collision. Site security towers remain in place, despite the path having been re-opened. These should be placed within the site boundary or removed, as their motion detection is redundant with the path now open. The issues were discussed with the site manager, who took on board the need to maintain a 1500mm gap for cycles but was unable to commit to addressing these obstructions. They stated that the security towers are necessary for CCTV and couldn't be relocated. They raised concern with grass damage if site welfare facilities were relocated. An email response that reads: Hi! - The bikes are very heavy, meaning this isn’t an option for everyone - The bikes have an onboard electronic wheel lock, which makes them harder to move - The bikes sound an alarm when interfered with, which not everyone wants to deal with - If you’re trying to park your own bike, you shouldn’t have to tidy up the space first; we don’t ask this of car drivers when parking… - Citizens shouldn’t have to deal with publicly funded amenities being blocked by instruments of corporate profit-making :) Can folks move the bikes? Shared use pavement near Port Seton. Flag shows it's blowing a gale. Strava map. 27.5 mile journey took 1hr 55mins at average speed of 14.5mph. Assisted by 533Wh with leg power not quantified. Road diversion added miles. Train to Berwick-upon-Tweed from Edinburgh. Escher like station at East Linton has lots of ramps and stairs. Ticket machine in west bound car park. Possibly the cheapest most restricted ticket ever bought. From ScotRail only valid Transpennine. Usual price is £10.50 as over 25 miles.

If you cycle tour then you now have an alternative to ScotRail / Citylink / Flix for bike transport. Ember routes now go as far north as Wick & Thurso

Bikes are easy to prebook on Ember site. They don't insist on bike bag but not too muddy as bike may go in hold.

Let's face it. Cowgate is the capital's original 'traffic sewer'. 🐀 🐀 🐀 Most local residents are not car owners. Most visitors walk. Time to open it with space for safely walking through / close to through traffic. This in turn will reduce rush hour queues in Grassmarket using this East West route.
