This is a really interesting paper - 2008 was a watershed moment like 1968, but as it turns out post-polarization, now careening in the opposite direction.
A new PNAS paper finds that polarization increased immediately after the invention of smartphones and the advent of social media, which both appeared around the same year, 2008.

From the Oklahoma U student paper: the school is now saying it will automatically suspend faculty (with pay) in response to student complaints

Such BS but coming to a state near you
This is an insane proposal, which has to be taken serious anyway, as that is the time and place we live in.

Expect similar plans to be discussed in GOP-controlled states soon (in my state higher teaching loads have been pushed by some Republicans for a while).
Proposed Model Bill Would Change College Tenure, Teaching, & Research
Three conservative groups have proposed model legislation that would dramatically change faculty tenure paths, teaching loads, research activities and hiring authority

In Minnesota, this grandmother, a U.S. citizen, was arrested, restrained, and disappeared for hours, not for interfering, not for resisting, but for asking a question.

If they can arrest Sue Tincher for standing on a public sidewalk, they can arrest anyone.

No really I think datacenters in space are a great idea. So great, in fact, that they should freeze all datacenter construction on Earth until they can get this space thing going.

Western Washington is currently experiencing record flooding from a series of strong atmospheric rivers. 12 rivers are at major flood stage. 100,000 people await evacuation orders.

Will some places see less severe climate impacts than others? Yes. Does anywhere promise safe haven? Absolutely not.
Climate migration is difficult to study, and even harder to predict, because a complex constellation of factors guides the decision to pick up and move. But some experts say a historic population shift has already begun, and Western Washington should start preparing now to become a “climate haven.”
Is the Pacific Northwest ready for a wave of climate migration?

Watching people humanize ChatGPT while dehumanizing literal small human children is one of the most fucked things about this era.
I don’t care if your book has a Paint cover. I don’t care if you have typos. I don’t care if you took the cover photo with your phone. But I do not want to read a book YOU DID NOT WRITE.

Writing requires you to write. To feel. To think. To impart that. That is step one to Being a Writer.

It appears that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, within the past week, scrubbed a large amount of climate change content from its official website, as well as *removed human-caused warming* from the discussion on its "causes of climate change" page.

What bugs me about this name theft is that they also put them in different geographic positions relative to each other.
The funny thing about the UK is how many of their cities are named after American ones, sometimes with the "New" lopped off the beginning.
