If you’re new here, here’s a little about me: I’m a licensed geologist and hydrogeologist in Washington State. I am also a certified K-12 math and earth/space science educator in WA. Science communication is my passion.
While at geology field camp in southern Utah (Cedar City), a bunch of us young adult college students went to go see Armageddon when it came out. There was so much questionable geology and we were dying laughing. No one else in the theater understood why we were laughing so hard.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.

Thank you, Nick!
The recent executive order on AI tries to rip away states’ rights and allows a small group of billionaire bros and friends of the first family to dictate AI policy for the entire country. Our office will keep fighting to protect people from the illegal acts of this administration.

I'm in the pink zone, but thankfully we are fine. Haven't ventured out to the lookout a mile away to see what the floodplain looks like.
Washington state, we are not out of the woods yet. Please continue to follow local authorities for the latest info regarding safety updates.

Let's stay alert and look out for our neighbors. We get through this together.

The administration did something that wasn't cruel for once? And in a timely fashion? That might actually help people? Hallelujah!
I just received a phone call from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. Secretary Noem informed me that the president signed our request for an emergency declaration. We have also received written confirmation of that emergency declaration.

Interesting thread on centrist politics as strategy. I keep hearing that US Democrats are more like European center right politicians. And our GOP is like nothing that exists there because it’s so far right.
To put some numbers on @gelliottmorris.com’s point: WelcomePAC raised $11.3M, mostly from hedge funds and billionaires, including large donations from the Waltons and Murdochs (yes, the owners of Fox News). Perhaps not the most disinterested source of guidance.

Was just purusing a WSJ comments section on the ACA subsidies that no GOPers have recommended a realistic alternative for. The comment was something like, "I'm so happy I turned 65 because I was able to escape Obamacare. Thank goodness for Medicare." I am still scratching my head on that one.

Just learned from the CBC that the town of Sumas (Washington) has a flood siren that can be heard in Abbotsford (BC). What’s interesting is why. I’ll find more info and share it here.

That’s a lot of water.
View from the downtown Mount Vernon River Walk along the Skagit River. The Division Street bridge is expected to close at noon.

I hope someone makes this point during a press meeting. I’d love to see his face on Air force one trying to calculate that.
Just wait till he learns they're all using Arabic numerals.

Yikes. 😟
Skagit County has ordered Mount Vernon and upriver communities of Hamilton, Rockport, Marblemount and Concrete to evacuate to high ground as soon as possible.

Everyone in Skagit County living in the 100-year floodplain will likely receive an evacuation notice today.

Andrew Zimmern, who I did not have on my environmental activist bingo card told them they were all full of shit.
Celebrity chefs told Californians that PFAS-coated pans were “safe,” and successfully lobbied Gavin Newsom to veto a bill phasing them out

They didn’t mention they all sell PFAS-coated pans.

I just got off the phone with the National Weather Service and am alarmed to hear that the Skagit River will peak 4-5 feet above the record crest level. Please please please stay alert and follow evacuation orders. This is not just another flood.

Why are famous chefs fighting PFAS bans?
The answer, in retrospect, is obvious—and it’s part of a larger campaign to stop bans on Teflon cookware nationwide.

Climate migration is difficult to study, and even harder to predict, because a complex constellation of factors guides the decision to pick up and move. But some experts say a historic population shift has already begun, and Western Washington should start preparing now to become a “climate haven.”
Is the Pacific Northwest ready for a wave of climate migration?

Mr. Rubio said switching back to Times New Roman would “restore decorum and professionalism to the department’s written work.” Calibri is “informal” when compared to serif typefaces like Times New Roman and “clashes” with the department’s official letterhead. www.nytimes.com/2025/12/09/u...

Man, this storm has been a doozy. We only got 1/6” but everywhere else got hammered. Of course, floods hit downstream so it doesn’t matter where the rain hits.
Washington State Parks have closed Lake Sylvia State Park in Montesano and they are actively monitoring the 100-year-old Lake Sylvia dam. Downstream residents should be prepared for more flooding and remain ready to take action on short notice. #wawx

Glad to see this.
I created a Data Center Workgroup to study the impact of data centers on our energy use, economy, communities, and the environment. The workgroup issued its preliminary report last week.

I have directed the Department of Revenue to engage in Tribal consultation on the preliminary report.

Don’t land yourself on the “dumb ways to die” list.
There's lots of water over roads right now and some cities and counties may not be able to get road closed signs up fast enough. If you see a road closed sign, don't go around it. A flooded road may have hidden dangers such as washed out roadbeds or underwater obstructions. #wawx
