Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House.

We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication.

They own what happens next.

i honestly have never seen a political leader so thoroughly destroy their credibility so quickly and, on the other side, it is abundantly clear that if anyone can claim a genuine leadership of large parts of the democratic party, it is AOC.
Folks is it good when your own party's leadership in the House is dropping "listen to the women" and MLK quotes on you while swing state members of your caucus are talking about new leadership

Here's the list of who needs to be primaried. They betrayed the American people. They are complicit in handing the power of Congress + a giant slush fund over to an unelected ketamine addict. That have betrayed the working class and thrown away the only leverage Dems had in Congress. For what?

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

Same thing w/ the “crisis of boys/men.” When it was just Black, Latino, and Native boys & men, it was all “a pathology born of bad cultures.” Now that it’s impacting white boys & men, it’s suddenly a complex melange of social trends 🙄

Not the first person to make this observation, but it's so striking how the media covered the crack epidemic as a problem caused by black/urban drug users and the fentanyl epidemic as a problem imposed externally on white/rural drug users.

Yes, this is a very important thing to acknowledge; the statements of the ICE officers on the scene re: the legal basis is as trustworthy as to the actual bounds of the law as the legal musings of a random beat cop or detective. They’re not lawyers or prosecutors. bsky.app/profile/davi...
ICE can't unilaterally revoke someone's green card, even if some ICE agents think they can. ICE agents in general don't know much about immigration law because they don't have to. They just detain people and let the courts sort it out.

Yes. In 2003, the Supreme Court even blessed *mandatory* pre-removal hearing detention with no right to seek bond.

There is a process to challenge the legal basis for detention, but that’s not an option for most people as the law does generally permit detention in nearly all cases.
Can they lawfully detain someone prior to the removal hearing being held?

While the State Department CAN revoke *visas* with very little legal process involved, stripping someone of a green card is done by DHS (not the State Department) and requires filing formal charges alleging a violation of immigration law and a removal hearing in front of an immigration judge.

Again, the Secretary of State has no authority to “revoke” green cards.
UPDATE — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has now commented on the Trump admin’s detaining & attempted green card revocation of a Columbia Gaza encampment student negotiator:
“We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported.”
NEWS: Last night, the Department of Homeland Security detained a Palestinian who helped lead the Columbia encampment.

Agents told him his visa was revoked. He said he had a green card. They were confused—then said that was revoked too.

His attorney demanded a warrant. Agents hung up instead.

Now we are witnessing government power being used to silence dissent and censor ideas. Now we know what real society-wide chilling effects look like. 🧵
