Is science too obsessed with metrics, large-scale projects & “blockbuster” outputs? Desai & Jun argued that preserving the "auteur" spirit of individual creativity, exploration and risk-taking is essential for maintaining the creativity that drew us into science in the 1st place.

A massive thank you to the folks from the STFC & Boulby Underground Laboratory for showing me around for #DarkMatterDay!

We went 1km underground & I spoke with people who do this every day to better understand how our universe works. It was such a unique experience & I can't wait to show you more!!

"tarmac is short for tarmacadam" sounds like a shitpost but it's literally true
today's etymology is "tarmac": a clipping of "tarmacadam" via "tar" (because you add tar) + "macadam" (a type of crushed-rock road paving material/technique), the latter named after its inventor 19th century Scottish engineer John McAdam en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarmaca...

Most of an Earthquake’s Energy Is Released as Heat, Not Shaking
Up to 98 percent of the energy of an earthquake goes into flash heating rocks, not shaking the ground, new research shows. The finding could help yield better earthquake forecasts

Did two nights of camping by Trampas Lakes (11,300 ft) with Boy Scouts; ten of us making a six mile hike in. Gorgeous area, in the shadows of the second highest peak in NM.

There is a tongue-in-cheek unit of volume called the Hubble-barn, equal to the volume of a cylinder with cross-sectional area of one barn (100 fm^2 - about the size of a uranium nucleus) and height of one Hubble length (14.4 billion light years).

It works out to three and a half gallons.
Ok folks: what is your favorite fact that you share with people (maybe a bit too) eagerly?

If an elderly but distinguished scientist says that something is possible, he is almost certainly right; but if he says that it is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
