Like, we need to remember that these AI programs do not run on the ether - their ecological impact is because they're power hungry, computer intensive, heat producing systems.

They're EXPENSIVE!

If they don't make money, they GO AWAY.
One of the reasons I've never bought into AI doomerism, is that to believe "it's here to stay, get used to it!" you have to buy into the idea that AI generated elements are so hardcoded or integral as to be permanent, when they really aren't.

You can simply remove it, and it's gone just like that.

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

Extremely cute and inoffensive SFW furry art account gets nuked by paypros. Come on, this is insane.

Get to those phones. Don't let them rest.
I'm devastated, if I don't find an alternative that works with argentinians I'm contemplating the worst, I can't do regular jobs, art was my job for around 15 years
I don't do nsfw even when people insist me to
my life was already crumbling and now I don't know what to do

Rather unsettling that corporations are acting like this is a totally normal "black friday" but uh...

Reality is that the US economy is a mess. No amount of "buy, buy, buy, sale, sale, sale" can fix it.

Keeping the same gfm for transparency sake

For the love of everything, please don’t buy your kids shit that lets them talk to LLM or generative AI in general.

optimistic nihilism is the best thing we've ever found

GOOD NEWS EVERYONE, NOTHING MATTERS SO LET'S ENJOY IT AND SLAM A FIST INTO THE FACE OF AN UNCARING FUTURE TO MAKE IT CARE
You know what. Sure, it's a 2am thought alright, but maybe a touch of "if nothing matters...Let's do what we can and enjoy what we have" is what's needed in the now.

Shit sucks, but we're still alive. Will our actions matter in the long run? Only if we *make* them matter.
(Which is funny to me, because I genuinely love No Man's Sky, which arguably ALSO has a nihilistic storyline, but it's more in the "well fuck it. if nothing matters, then let's do what we can and enjoy what we have" category.)

Having finished the season...I'd say that while Billionaire's Bunker has some elements that might seem off to an American audience (lots of melodrama, and sex of...varying levels of consent), I did hit "love this" when Netflix asked because I'm curious what a Season 2 would look like.

Shout out to all the queer tech folks who ALSO had a quiet Thanksgiving spent troubleshooting issues with programs and poking around what's available for extensions and whatnot.

OK so I hope this doesn't get me banned, but my most controversial Thanksgiving opinion is that those pilgrims & puritans shoulda been merked as soon as they got off their ships.

Doomsday cults are bad 💅.

Gentle reminder that if you're inviting someone over, either let them bring their own food or prepare something they can eat. And ffs DON'T SNEAK INGREDIENTS INTO THINGS AS A "JOKE." You can literally kill someone.

(grabs linux distro devs by the shoulder)

If the only way to install software without the terminal is via a package manager limited by its repos, then installing software is not easy. People have to be able to download and install via GUI methods dammit.

I *cannot* believe that for an article about IDEs aka the program for doing programming, instead of taking the perfect opportunity to make programmer art of the linux penguin, the writer just did genAI art.

Perfect opportunity for an injoke missed in favor of using plagiarism machine.

for some context, as of late, most of us are struggling mightily to even afford the basics.
For the people outside the US who get your ideas about Americans from TV:

Almost all the "average, ordinary" people shown on US TV are upper middle class. They represent at most 15% of the population.

Using the belief that creators are the "petite bourgeoisie" to justify pirating books/stealing art is EXACTLY what makes it so hard for anyone who isn't rich to pursue their creative dreams

If you steal our art, you PERSONALLY are preventing us from building sustainable careers
Honestly, people calling creators the "petite bourgeoisie" makes me want to snap.

We're working folk. And we work really hard. For next to nothing.

We're not lounging around eating bonbons. We're trying to figure out how we're going to be able to pay rent next month.
