It is fascinating to me how many different kinds of scams aimed at authors exist these days, given that most of us are broke. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/n...

but what *really* makes me incandescent is that Must Read is preying on newer authors. people who aren't yet plugged in to networks, who don't have much experience with short fiction contracts, who might overlook a dogshit contract because of the magazine's prestige.

because prestige *is* a thing.

Recommended reading for short fic writers of any genre. The spec fic community has established very good, author focused publication standards over recent decades—other genres can learn from them, and from the tenacity of the experienced authors now holding the line against MRM’s awful boilerplate.
This is worth reading for many reasons, but especially the detailed discussion of indemnification clauses - something I know I knew ZILCH about when I was just starting out in the speculative short fiction scene.

I knew about OTHER issues, but not that one.
On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

The Surrey International Writers Conference has been my favorite conference for over a decade. This year, it's not happening, because the hotel is in a labor disputed.

SiWC had already purchased plane tickets, etc, for all the presenters. Can you help ensure its future?

I really enjoyed @kharb.bsky.social's short story A Summer Soup to Cure Magical Thinking in Year's Best Canadian Fantasy & Science Fiction: Volume 2. It was witty, clever, and very enjoyable. Guess i should be tagging @ourmankoto.bsky.social in these for his selections.

SiWC has been the beating heart of my local writing community for over thirty years—please consider donating to keep this not for profit conference going after a financially brutal year.
We were heartbroken to have to cancel this year’s SiWC. We want to continue to provide an inclusive, welcoming & career-expanding experience for years to come. We're running a GoFundMe to help secure the future of SiWC. Please help if you can by boosting or donating. Thank you! gofund.me/5b4760382

We’ve been informed our Moksha turned itself off over the weekend for novella & novelette submissions 👀

To be honest: we don’t know why or how.

But we’re open again, and will be extending the deadline past August 30–more to come!
