Megan Aldrich, 33, was shocked to discover that, despite a long history of debunked headlines, Snopes-worthy urban legends and baseless moral panics, confirmation bias is still alive and well in people who really should know better.
Autistic woman just assumed everyone was consuming media critically
An autistic woman has made the foolish and illogical assumption that other people consume media critically instead of taking everything at face value, it has been claimed. Megan Aldrich, 33, was…

This is really good advice (I mean, the piece in full!).

I try to do a fair amount of this already - not always successfully by any means of course, but that's ok.

I've noticed VPNs failing on some mobile networks. Could see them becoming blocked on cafe, hotel WiFi if this nonsense takes hold.

VPNs are relied upon extensively for business, so blocking VPN traffic won't be acceptable.

It's like banning the use of roads because some people drive dangerously.
The British government admits it is now monitoring VPNs use by UK residents. Regulator Ofcom has contracted with an AI-powered surveillance service to detect the number of citizens using VPNs to evade the Online Safety Act.

The UK tech minister has said a VPN ban is on the table.
Exclusive: Ofcom is monitoring VPNs following Online Safety Act. Here's how
Ignoring VPNs risks creating ineffective laws, but tracking them threatens people's privacy

I wonder what "suspended" means, if there's no set timeout, and you're not told why so have no way to rectify or challenge.

Note on Sarah's substack:

"I’ve been suspended from BlueSky. I don’t know why. I wasn’t online much today, and the last things I posted were excerpts from my substack newsletter articles. The suspension followed without explanation."

Anybody who had a vision to bring American levels of political, cultural and social polarisation to Britain - whether their motive was clicks or cash, ideology, boredom or anything else - would make it their top strategic priority to abolish the BBC, or to damage and diminish it at the very least
Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

Once every 20 years or so, the director-general of the BBC is forced to resign for being insufficiently rightwing. Alastair Milne in 1987. Greg Dyke in 2004. Tim Davie in 2025. The great irony is that the BBC was in all cases profoundly biased towards established power. But just not biased enough …

A national newspaper journalist went on a British TV channel to claim police stats showed asylum-seekers committed 44% of sex crimes in Dorset.

This shocking claim was treated as fact by the channel which promoted the clip on social media where it was amplified by AI.

Except... it's bollocks.

I'm old enough to remember Tim Davie being installed as Director General, *because* he would pull the BBC to the right, which he duly did.

Much good it did him, in the end.

On this day of remembrance, it seems the US administration have forgotten.
1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

Turns out, it seems, that a transphobic ex-advisor to a BBC board committee, unhappy that BBC reporting was not sufficiently transphobic, went bleating to the transphobic Trump administration to get some validation.
