Montage of 12 (4x3) vector maps created by me, Keir DuBois. L-R row x row they depict: the Denver Botanic Gardens, Downtown Homewood IL, the Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, Lahaina HI fire damage, the Riverside County Fair, Wilmington NC, my "Nua Gazetteer" fantasy atlas cover, Florida National Park Units, Iron-Curtain era Europe, Boston as if it were a microchip, the USA showing programs supporting diversity in design by state, and the Santa Barbara City College campus.

If this isn't the painful truth. If we could just keep this series going forever and never have to declare a winner.

If I had to complain about anything in this Mariners/Jays series is there’s no bad guys

A good album to help me get through being 19. Got my first bass guitar the same year. Several years later, my second band was named Honey White after the first song on this album. It sounds pretty good for being 30.
morphine "yes" album cover. closeup abstract image of a log burning in a fireplace.

When they hit, the waves' impact often resembles the short sharp jolts of local earthquakes (as opposed to rollers I've experienced in other areas of the state), which is definitely an unsolicited bonus feature.

Random observation: it seems to take about 10 minutes for the shockwave of a rocket launch from Vandenberg to reach my windows in Ventura, a distance of ~90ish miles.

Earlier than me. I feel like I was only starting to not be an idiot when I was, like, 46 or 47.

(I am now almost 49 and probably still very idiotic)

I can't believe Sam Altman is only 40. I was only starting not to be an idiot when I was 40. Absurd to put so much power, global quantities of power, in the hands of so many men in their 40s (and younger!).

Rebranding discourse always makes my head hurt. Neither pros nor lays ever cover themselves in anything resembling glory.

Welp didn't have "Padres will yet again be seeking a manager this offseason" on my bingo card, but perhaps I should have

Color-related issues I can work with. "Bad" typeface choices I've learned to get over. It's the elastic nature of how my time is valued that always seems to be the rub, but of course I'm not the only one, so I won't cry *too* loudly about it.

(those are both design-related, but I'm sure any map mutuals can come up with carto-equivalents)

In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand.

"Make the logo bigger"

Or, scarier:

"That shouldn't take long"

The editor won’t mind if I go over word count a little bit.

Nah he'll stop the 2025 season at the point when the Red Sox and Yankees both got eliminated

Cubs-Brewers damn well better not be a blowout tomorrow.

I want as much baseball as possible.
keirdubois.bsky.social
I can still deploy it at both big-market big-apple teams all winter, though.

Perhaps predictably, just like this character, the laugh is now on me. Welp
keirdubois.bsky.social
Related: the laugh I did after tonight's game between the NLDS 2 and 3 seeds, in which the 2 seed won handily
a man in a suit and bow tie is smiling and laughing .
Alt: michael from the good place laughing evilishly.

It sucks me in and makes me care, for the most trivial reasons, about teams and/or players I wouldn't give a second look at in the regular season.

The postseason knows that there's only so much baseball left, favorite team or not, and that it can bleed me for all I've got.
iluvbaseball.bsky.social
I don't know if I'm built for postseason baseball.

Then I can tell you that the most recent set I've completed shares a title with the Baldur's Gate 3 fanfiction I'm currently writing

(the lyrics are way better)

Things that will never be in my bio: age, job title, marital status, religious affiliation, political beliefs, pronouns, or other flotsam of identity that allow people to reductively judge me.

(people can judge me about my song lyrics, but that just confirms they're not worth my time)
keirdubois.bsky.social
My bio is indeed the first line of the most recent original recording project I released, which might turn out to be the final original recording project I release.

your bio should be your death poem. the thing you set up when you make your account, that thing

I think a real problem in this world is a lack of posting bushido. You can go to war with the mods, with the big accounts, hell with the government itself on X the Everything Site, sometimes it is the honorable thing to do. But you should have your death poem written.

For better and worse, some of my best friends are Dodgers fans.
keirdubois.bsky.social
I'm good with it actually if it keeps certain fanbase responses to Padres elimination out of my feed, because they'll absolutely still be doing that two days later
keirdubois.bsky.social
Actually seeing Seattle in the world series would be fun since it would be their first
keirdubois.bsky.social
And it's off again. Only thing left to root for now is for yankee-dodger implosions so we don't have a repeat of last year's FBI vs CIA world series

Looks like mindlessness is back on the menu, boys!
