I was horrified last week to receive a bill in the mail for my kids' covid-19 shots. The charges were itemized as HOSPITAL SERVICES, an inkling of what's to come.

When can we throw these grifters out?
This is what Danielle Smith is priming Alberta for. This. And, incredibly, she's probably going to use our driver's licenses as the portal. But, Canadians have no idea how hard a for profit healthcare system sucks. So much out of pocket even when you have insurance. #ableg #cdnpoli
My health insurance premiums will more than double in January. I pay a little less than $500/month for my current silver plan.

I just reapplied and my new premium will be $1062/month.

And don’t forget: I still have a co-pay for every visit and pay for prescriptions.

Yeah the NL is flat, but in my most humble opinion, rain + cold north wind makes for the absolute worst cycling conditions. I'd take Calgary winter over Dutch winter any day.
Posts about urban biking in Dutch cities are routinely replied to with comments like “well, they have the big advantage of being relatively flat.”

The Dutch also have the big advantage of not constantly making excuses about why they can’t make clearly smarter city-making decisions. #Leadership

Can you explain more about what a train is? Asking for Albertans everywhere…
A book and a train is a hell of a combination.

“The vacated homes were substantially cheaper than the new units and spanned diverse locations and housing types.”

When people move into new housing developments, they free up space in older housing. This is good for housing affordability and availability.
Interesting new working paper that studies chains of movers after the construction of a new apartment building in Honolulu.

Paper finds that the project resulted in the opening up other, lower cost, housing on the island, benefiting the housing market overall.

This media appearance was almost ruined by the fact that my husband was reading our mutual copy of the Power Broker on the go that day, and got home a mere two minutes before the appointed time to place it just so in my zoom background.

Every time I get behind the wheel of a car, I remember that I am wielding a weapon that can cause untold destruction, I wish more drivers thought about that, especially the ones that cavalierly almost run me over on a regular basis.
Ok, sure, let’s call it a shared responsibility, but let’s apportion that responsibility proportional to how much capacity for destruction each party in the equation has.
When a pedestrian is not paying attention and walks into something, no one dies. When a driver is not paying attention and drives into something people are often injured/killed. How long will it fucking take for society to STOP EQUATING THE TWO?

Cllr Atkinson asks about educating public re: pedestrian injuries/deaths. Deputy Chief O'Brien says peds + drivers both need education. People are being hit in crosswalks + jaywalking. Drivers not paying attention. "We’re trying to target everybody because it is a shared responsibility." #yyccc

I really enjoyed presenting at this year's budget hearing:
November 26, 2025 at 9:16 PM
Kudos to Cllr. McLean for acknowledging that the city has to respond to rapid population growth! Can we please apply this to every other budget line? How about transit? Rec centres?
Police seeking $49M budget increase for 2026. Incl $28M for missing revenue from photo radar on Deerfoot + Stoney (axed by prov). Cllr McLean says police "woefully underfunded" in recent years. Calgary's cop to population radio has been dropping as city grows. #yyccc

Slower speed limits, but also smaller cars, fewer cars.

How do we move away from a culture where the default mode of transportation is a giant murder machine?
Another horrendous, yet completely preventable tragedy. Spoke to #yyccc about this. Yes, traffic lights. But also slower speed limits are needed.

Can confirm, what an incredible performance!
Finally, violinist Amaryn Olmeda rocks up for the Barber Violin Concerto Op. 14 and crushes it. I'm the type that watches the Sphinx Competition on Detroit @pbs.org. I've seen her perform, on TV, and now her first international virtuoso performance is in Calgary?! Yes, sister, yes! Brava! 3/3

Single family homes are the most luxurious type of housing. That’s why nearly every rich person lives in one.

This was SO STRIKING to me when I became a parent and I've searched high and low to find books that show any mode of transportation other than cars/trucks.

One of my favourites is Taro Gomi's Bus Stops, which normalizes everyday people taking the bus. pageskensington.com/item/BYvNReU...

For the past year, I've been doing an embedded "ethnographic" study of Calgary's election. As a consequence, I've mostly kept quiet about it. It'll still be months before I have qualitative results to share, but in the meantime, here are some results from our pre-election survey. #yyccc #yycvote
