I love this. I feel a little bad for the spellchecker, though.

This explains the badger-badger-badger mushroom-mushroom badger vs the terrifying American clawed monster that kills other animals with impunity.

None of that sentence was something I could ever have predicted writing. 🧐

Hope this was mildly interesting. It is equal parts fascinating and irritating to me and of course that makes it worth skeeting about before I'm done with my first cup of coffee.

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a fantastic day. 13/13

Now you might have noticed that "new-norwegian" Nynorsk assoc. with history. Go read about it en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nynorsk it's not what you think. taken from wikip the image below showing many different versions of "I" and "not". These forms aren't like cases, they are speakers choice. 12/
Image showing new Norwegian formal Norwegian and dialect forms of the words I as in me and the word not. Eg = jeg = eg, æg, e, æ, ei, i, je, and jæ which are all I.

Ikkje = ikke = ikkje, inte, enten, itte, itj, ikkji which are all not. These aren't forms required by grammar, these are personal preferences. You get to just use whatever has a nice mouth feel for you.

So anyway, they try to preserve language here and I respect that, but a problem with doing that is it makes a portion of it inaccessible to outsiders. I suspect that's a tiny bit reflective of this society in general. I'm not sure of the solution, but for me I'm not investing more time in Nynorsk.11

So all this comes back to the email I read trying to expose myself to interesting things in Nynorsk to make myself want to read more. This is abt renaming the space agency sprakradet.mailmojo.no/e/m/c/511875... All I did was make myself depressed that I need to learn to read yet another language.10/
Eit traust og tydeleg namn gjev tyngde - Språkrådet
Kva må eit statsorgan tenkje på når det skal få nytt namn? Eit namn må vera tydeleg og forklare kven vi er, seier eit direktorat som nettopp har vore gjennom ei namneendring.

decode well, you might figure out kva=hva, ikkje=ikke, navn=namn, but maybe mykje=mye and korleis=hvordan are not so easy to guess 🙄. But these Norskies are so exposed to a beautiful spectrum that they forget not everyone has that kind of framework. And, as an immigrant, you only get one form. 9/

with a full grammar, etc., and largely inaccessible to those from 'not Norway'. But, some Norskies will argue that it's just one letter difference between ikke and ikkje! Yep, one letter difference between bead and bread, read and red. See how that works? Different isn't the same. So if you can 8/

now how you are expected to receive communication from the govt about your rights and obligations. Now imagine you're a native Spanish speaking person. What could be seen as a quirky, quaint, and mildly inconvenient English form to a native speaker is now just another language. A full language 7/

The best comparison I (as a non linguist) can find in English would be reading Shakespearean English. You know it's English, and you mostly know what things mean but sometimes words have shifted so far over time you need a guide. Now, take ALL the spelling and change it to be phonetic. This is 6/

But inside Norway, there are dialects that are so fundamentally different from one another that they represent a real challenge. But unlike English, these aren't strongly correlated to socio-economics or education. They are just a fact that spoken language evolved separately from written language.5/
jtsveigdalen.bsky.social
the Nor. languages: Norskies generally have a spectrum of language they can understand with greater or lesser difficulty. Danish, Swedish, dialects from both those countries and/or the written forms represent a communication soup they can all eat if they have to, even if it's not to their taste. 4/

lots of nuance here. But more excitingly there are more than two national languages here. There are also indigenous peoples who have (not an expert here, don't @ me) a few different types of Sami languages. These languages have NO mutual intelligibility with Scandinavian languages IMHO. Back to 3/

common as Bokmål which is the most common. Nynorsk is legally mandated for government's public-facing stuff (lots of nuance here) at 25%. People either love it fanatically or hate it with equal passion. You need to learn both in school and you can choose which form you use. Again, there is 2/

I'm questioning my life choices. First thing I did this morning was open an email from Språkrådet and tumble down a Nynorsk rabbithole. It's been an hour and my head hurts.

If you're not aware, because most people I follow and follow me aren't Norwegian, Nynorsk is New Norwegian and not as 1/

We reset the "0 Days Since We Talked About Chernobyl" counter again. My better half had ordered a book he was super excited to receive. So, as the dutiful wife I drove to the train station where he had a short stop at today. But then, DISASTER struck! 1/2
A silly AI generated image with Chernobyl in the background (or some reasonable facsimile thereof) and a sign in the foreground reading "0 Days since we talked about chernobyl"

I've seen the show maybe 5-6 times through. It's good in its own right IMHO. I've been interested in the board game, but have not seen any data games. Sounds interesting!
