"Building more housing *somewhere else* is a majority opinion."

No, I disagree, this is a lie that NIMBYs say, they don't actually support building the housing. The only supporters of housing are non-NIMBYs, trying to win NIMBY support by proposing a different location doesn't work.

It's driver behavior wishcasting to put up a stop here on red sign 150 feet from the light. Either Wall St needs to be made one way eastbound or there needs to be another light prior to the tracks.
Screenshot of the stop here on red from streetview showing how far away the traffic signal is Google maps showing that the distance from the stop here on red bar and the stop light is 150 feet.
jrock08.bsky.social
This isn't a compromise though, it's a lose-lose.

Building dense housing only on big roads means that dense housing is only ever seen as a thing that sucks.

Building dense housing at all makes NIMBYs angry.

So we get homes that suck with all the NIMBY backlash.

This take is as coherent as trying to argue that a swimming teacher shouldn't try to make their lessons about water.
prrsignal.bsky.social
Do you want a middle class backlash?

If more housing gets built, take the win. Don't try to use housing as a vehicle for social justice.

I was shocked to learn in the Seattle Times that Bruce Harrell could have gone to the NFL, but gave up to go to law school instead. With a history of giving up like this, it's hard to believe that he'll fight for us at the first sign of difficulty.
jrock08.bsky.social
It's not a real plan, and we already have NIMBY backlash at mundane stuff like speed bumps. There will always be backlash, you can't do politics without it.

Does anyone know if 10 foot tall skeletons count as type 3 barriers?

Local politicians have incredible power to set local policy that effectively can't be touched by the federal government, but way too many local politicians refuse to use the levers of power they actually have.

Lee says that Bellevue can't set targets for reducing vehicle miles traveled because the city doesn't know what's going to happen with the federal government. "We're not in a dictatorship."
jrock08.bsky.social
Just to be clear, is attacking local journalists also not punching down?
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Harrell just said he hopes I'm quoting him correctly. Look, I am a VERY fast typist, but I use live transcription and try to correct its errors in the moment when I'm posting; I'm not getting all these long quotes down verbatim myself!

"I haven't done anything that I would consider punching down," Harrell said. He's claiming that Katie Wilson has only ever hired her campaign manager. (Everyone laughs). Now he's mocking her nonprofit, the Transit Riders Union. "I don't see that as punching down." "Good. Good," the MC says.
jrock08.bsky.social
I really want to know if Bruce Harrell thinks that the conservatives he's trying to win with this type of comment won't come for whatever city program he spins up.
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Harrell says the city pays into King County's health department, and suggests that Seattle should consider running its own health department. "I know the streets better here in Seattle than the county."
jrock08.bsky.social
Who is this for?
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Downtown could have "like, a 10-foot wall" where people could talk to AI versions of historical figures. "How cool would this be if we had like, a 10 foot wall. It's interactive and it's historical. And you could talk to Martin Luther King."...

I know this is a toughie for republicans like Suarez and reactionary centrists like Harrell, but the difference between individual citizens wearing masks and agents of the state wearing masks is that citizens are not required to identify themselves but agents of the state are.
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Huge applause at Suarez' question about whether Harrell will require protesters to take off their masks like he wants to make ICE take off their masks

Here's what he said about his work ethic during his 12 years on city council and 4 as mayor: "Anyone that works around me knows that I outwork everybody. I'll work seven days a week, 12, 14, hours a day. My people that work with me, they are amazed with the energy I have."

It's true, Katie Wilson has a record of showing up and winning.

Do we have enough bike parking in Columbia City for the next 8 years? There's no plan to add more

Bruce Harrell hasn't made needed improvements to Lake Washington Boulevard because he's listening to comments like this one from a Coexist LWB organizer and leader instead of the professional city staff.
LWB design and safety is absolutely NOT DEFICIENT. It meets and beats Vision Zero parameters unlike a significant number of other arterials in Southeast Seattle or the City in general. However, it seems to me that you always want to hype up ANY kind of unfortunate mishap that occurs on LWB without that same concern for other streets. Could it be that you, Greenways, Cascade and other cycling organizations just want to make an issue out of any and all misfortunes on LWB so that you can ultimately claim it your exclusive domain? You want LWB closed to cars from Mt. Baker Beach to Seward Park. Please excuse me if I mischaracterized your position.

It's a good thing no one was walking on the pedestrian path when this happened as there's no protection between the road and the path. We can't rely on luck for the next incident though. We need to make changes to this road to address dangerous driver behavior before someone dies.
jrock08.bsky.social
There was a pretty bad crash on LWB at ~6pm tonight when a driver plowed their car into a tree. SFD responded to perform a rescue extraction of at least one person. Thankfully based on what I can find it seems like all of the passengers and driver were ok.

We are all getting a masterclass (derogatory) from Bainbridge on how to kill a housing project
typewriteralley.bsky.social
Update on Bainbridge Island's beleaguered affordable housing project: the city was set to hold a public hearing on a zoning ordinance that would allow it to move forward, but a SEPA challenge has been filed by a former council candidate.

This is going to add weeks if not months of added process.

That is what they are expecting! Someone to come to their door, ask them what they want, and for them to be able to say, "Nothing. Keep things the same." And when people object to the process, what they are really objecting to is the outcome.
briware.bsky.social
And even if you’re not already on the board or mailing list, if you realize you don’t know that info, it’s probably not hard to just go look it up yourself. What are they expecting, that someone calls them up personally or comes and nails the info to their door every day?

Bruce Harrell's comprehensive plan legalized corner stores only on literal street corners, so he's not really even doing everything possible to build "corner stores" in neighborhoods.
ericacbarnett.bsky.social
Harrell talks about how much the city pays for food security, but that the municipal grocery store is an "unproven" idea. "The smarter approach is to get as many corner stores involved" as possible, "so we're doing everything possible to address food insecurity." And that's the end!
