If you live in San Francisco, today is a good day to familiarize yourself with the San Francisco Rapid Response Network, which has a 24-hour hotline for reporting ICE raids, actually verifies those raid reports, and does attorney activation: sfilen.org/resources/sf...

Cleve Jones gave a riveting, rousing speech at San Francisco's No Kings rally yesterday, and he's graciously allowing me to publish it. He began: "The pronouns I use the most are the ones probably understood the least by those in the White House today. They are WE, US and OURS."
Cleve Jones: "This Is Our Country"
This is the first guest essay at Meditations in an Emergency. I'm proud to bring you yesterday's speech by the great Cleve Jones, who has for nearly half a century been a key organizer for the global ...

The governor signed SB 63, the Connect Bay Area Act, this afternoon, authorizing a ballot measure in five Bay Area counties in November 2026 to fund transit. Thank you @gavinnewsom.bsky.social for working to keep Bay Area moving.
Oh nifty! I didn’t expect there to be 10s of thousands of state employees in the 9 county Bay Area. Helpful to know, thank you.
Ooo where did the stat “>25k” come from?

BART @bart.gov · 24d
You all have shown up for BART, which means it is time to add cars and run longer trains.

Starting today:

🟨Yellow Line trains will increase from 8 cars to 9 cars.

🟥Red Line trains will increase to four 8 car trains in the AM and PM Peak.

The way this message still needs to be amplified.
To get a job as a CEO of a transit agency you should either have been a transit reliance rider or have been a bus driver.
🚌 Strategies used to turnaround Akron’s bus system:

1. CEO used to be a bus driver, now rides the bus with customers
2. Run buses every 15 minutes, 7 days a week
3. Concentrate on most needed services
4. Reduce job requirements

The tell here is defining street capacity as a how many vehicles they can fit instead of the number of *people* they can move. Cars are the least efficient way to move people.
Okay on that note, will try to go to sleep. Happy groggy Monday y’all
The gays
“Did you feel that?”
“Me and my roommates all woke up”
“Are you okay?”

One year ago today, California realized the first part of its' HSR dream.

Purpose-built trains that increased the freedom of everyone on the corridor.

At @monicamallon.bsky.social's invitation, I boarded the very first electric train in service at 06:57. It was one of the best days of my life.
Literally the same spot earlier.
Fewer things spark more joy for me than the overlap of transit and art. If you’re like me, I’d check this event out on Sept. 24 🚄🎨🚎

Lurie allowing Waymo/Uber onto Market while cutting Muni service for 240,000 daily riders is despicable, and keeps anyone without tons of wealth out of downtown.

We will not let the Mayor and his corporate buddies create an SF for the wealthy only.

Canceling these grants without cause isn’t just wrong — it’s illegal. These are legally binding agreements, and the Authority has met every obligation, as confirmed by repeated federal reviews, as recently as February 2025.
