This is Diomedes “Guayubín” Olivo. He made his major league debut with the Pirates at age 41 years and 277 days. He pitched three seasons with a 3.10 ERA (126 ERA+).

He is the all-time winningest pitcher in the Dominican League, going 86-46 with a 2.11 ERA.

His brother Chi-Chi also played in MLB.

By framing what should be a reputation and legacy destroying (and likely criminal investigation in inciting) revelation an obstacle to overcome, it allows people who would like to ignore the whole thing do so, not as part of a grotesque moral failure, but as a part of a grand redemptive triumph.

while I’m being cranky, access journalism needs to go. When the president does his “I’m alpha because I insulted you” thing somebody needs to fall on his sword and say “what the fuck is wrong with you, old man?” on a hot mic. the hero of the wizard of Oz is Toto.

Is this all just a shameless plug for the book I wrote about Siskel & Ebert that is still available and tells the story of how that 1st episode came together 50 years ago this week?

I mean it’s not *all* just that...
Opposable Thumbs by Matt Singer: 9780593540152 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books
Once upon a time, if you wanted to know if a movie was worth seeing, you didn’t check out Rotten Tomatoes or IMDB. You asked whether Siskel & Ebert had given it “two thumbs up.”...

This is what the "weirdo" meme from the last election was gesturing act, but couldn't quite articulate: all the energy on the right comes from people with no sense of identity besides intrusive politicization of everything.

Bessent's not only hiding these docs, he bizarrely claimed Treasury has no role investigating them at all. It’s a lie. It's impossible someone with his background doesn’t know about Treasury's extensive role investigating the kinds of financial crimes Epstein must have been committing.

Could argue the misogyny Summers expressed both publicly while president of Harvard and in emails to Epstein says more about the culture at our most elite institutions than any of the frontpage freakouts over academia in the past few years but hey

There's a big argument to be made that Trumpism is a revolt of America's hereditary elites who are apoplectic that the beginnings of a true meritocracy threatened to replace some of them.

I saw him open for Jason & The Scorchers in Nashville in 1997. He brought his mentor Jimmy Buffett up for a song. RIP
RIP Todd Snider. Sad for selfish reasons (hoped for decades more great music, shaken when anyone around my age dies) but also because his last days were so troubled.
