Personally I think the president should be subject to far more legal constraints. He shouldn’t be able to order killings on the high seas or abductions on city streets or the demolition of public buildings.

So if this shit polarizes Americans against presidential power, I‘ll take it lol

It’s the visceral symbolism, though: turns out even “the people‘s house” was just a myth;

legally, presidents can do whatever they want with the property, and this truth had merely been cloaked by the voluntary exercise of what conservatives approvingly call sovereign grace.

Also more than 3/4 of the states have already enacted this reform for their own executive. Some as early as the 1840s, some quite recently. It shouldn‘t be hard to pass with supermajorities because it’s just so damn familiar.

It’s a massive expansion! Costing about the same as the amount he’s taking from DOJ, and paid for by private interests expecting who knows what in return.

Neither of these things are scandals, however, so long as the prez, and DC (and the GOP) generally, choose not to be scandalized by them.

Scandal, but not illegal. Federal laws generally exempt construction at the White House from oversight.

Obama wouldn't have done this bc of norms, he and his staffs' sense of ethics, and perhaps fear of public criticism. Freed from those restraints, a president is bound only by the law.

i was wrong, unfortunately, the myriad federal laws regulating this sort of thing do not apply to the White House, so it's probably not illegal, only unethical.

a system of laws? more like a system of "what's the worst that could happen?" clauses exempting the president-king from oversight
