Je est un∙e autre, but also a translator from Italian
Translators: have you ever found yourselves making bizarre phonetic spelling mistakes (won>one), as if you were taking dictation? I’ve done this pretty much forever, but *only* when I’m translating, and usually in my quick first drafts. Otherwise I tend to be an excellent speller.

Ieri sera ho ritirato delle stampe e della carta per mio marito docente alle medie. Costo: €53 di tasca sua. Ma una cazzo di fotocopiatrice a scuola, magari? Si può avere, nell'ottava economia mondiale? Ah no? Belle priorità davvero

Papyrus plants are supposedly safe for cats, but not if the cat eats something unwise and then tries to purge with papyrus and vomits and the sharp leaves get stuck behind her palate. The last few days have been awful for everyone involved. Luckily we've still got our micia. Not the papyrus, though.

For your collective delectation this holiday season:
Quite possibly the silliest thing I've ever written (and definitely the most ridiculous graph I've ever made!)

Jingle Bells (Batman Smells): an incomplete festive folk-rhyme taxonomy

ProPublica spoke to about 150 people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.”

We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words.

Just finished a 434-line poem in ABBAAB and feeling very proud‒which is much needed because I've been glum about translation lately. This means I'm halfway through the book and will need sets of three rhyming words only in one much shorter poem. Two now feels like half the weights are off the bar

Wasn’t planning on celebrating because I rarely do, been out of the country for 27 years, holiday makes me sad, also said country makes me sad. But just *happened* to buy a little piece of turkey and am making some cream of turkey soup with little herby dumplings. Stealth thankfulness, I guess

Linguists, you are the best. Happy Linguistics Day, and thank you for doing all those things I would never want to do myself—like analyzing spectrograms and corpus data—but I'm glad you seem to enjoy. Because I enjoy hearing about the results.

Just noticed that Hannity called Westchester, Nassau, and Suffolk "the outer boroughs." Also: reports are streaming in that rich people have been sighted in these places!

Microsoft has the worst CAPTCHA ever, which is saying a lot. WTF, why are the images 1 mm tall? (It took a while to even identify the "person" they wanted me to move around.) Nice that after several hours of registration they've allowed me - for now - to use the laptop I spent hundreds of euros on

In my Italian town, pop. 35k, there was a march linked to a general strike in support of the Gaza aid flotilla, and even here, over 1000 people showed up. Because although the mayor is now on the right, it's still an industrial port with a long union history. Movement infrastructure is everything
Why doesn't the US have a general strike? Well you can point to culture or whatever but I think structure is of not immediate use here: does the US have organizations and institutions it can use to network, organize and mobilize a general strike? No.

Though not much of a peever, I wince every time I see something described with two words of such different weight that one of them gets flung off the seesaw. I keep coming across this lately, even in professional writing, and I am always outraged and miffed
