We don't need super fancy graphics for games to be good, you need to good gameplay, good mechanics and good characters. That's what makes a good game, if the graphics are the only thing you focus on then you're not making game for the right reasons

gender wasn't a mechanic at all until gen 2, so "gender unknown" as a category didn't exist before then.

the only explicitly gendered mons in gen 1 were the nidorans.
