One of my only remaining joys is that every single time Amy Coney Barrett makes a stupid argument, Ketanji Brown Jackson gets a chance to follow up and illustrate her stupidity.
And this will happen again, and again, for the rest of Barrett's life.

Louisiana guy "If you look at the black population in Louisiana, they're all over the place."

Again, the fundamental argument for why Louisiana (which has 6 congressional districts and is 1/3 nonwhite) should over-represent white folks is because black folks are "too spread out."

The Louisiana argument is essentially that you CAN use race to be racist but you CAN'T use race to ameliorate racism.

Sotomayor: "race is *always* a part of redistricting efforts."

Thank you. See, the Republicans are trying to gaslight people by suggesting they're for "no race in gerrymandering." That's just not true. Race is ALWAYS a factor when you're drawing a map.

Kagan: "It's not about intentional discrimination because Section 2 isn't about intentional discrimination, it's about effectual discrimination."

Again, this should be the winning argument. It won't be.

The fight here with Gorsuch and Kav vs Nelson is whether the "use" of race automatically means "discrimination" on the basis of race.

That's interesting to me, because it's basically the white folks telling on themselves. They cannot see a "use" of race that isn't synonymous with discrimination.

Nelson: "Section 2 requires neither a confession, nor an accusation of racism. It looks only at results."

This should be the winning point, but it won't, because Republicans.

There's a fun little colliquay where Alito is flatly mischaracterizing what happened at the lower court and Nelson and now Sotomayor or trying to correct him. But Sam is resistant to facts that show he's wrong so, for the second time this morning, he's just ignoring the facts.

Alito is saying that the black population in Louisiana is not geographically "compact" enough for the black population in Louisiana to have fair voting rights.

This is a huge story but massively under the radar in the UK.

A US Christian legal org called the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) is working to roll back abortion rights here using the same playbook it used in the US: briefing politicians, watching, waiting.

Said it before and I’ll say it again: leave your phone/smartwatch at home (if you can), don’t take/post photos, wear plain clothing and/or cover up distinguishable features, and HAVE A PLAN for either escaping a dangerous situation OR being arrested/detained.

Please be conscious if you protest this weekend that there are feds at the protest. They look like you and they sound like you, not like Steve Buscemi in that one clip with the skateboard. Thinking you can spot them is self delusion. Nobody you haven’t met needs to know your last name.

It should not be understated how much clever shit like this actually annihilates morale at places like ICE/CBP.

Getting made fun of like this on national television while people laugh at you is.. well, you may call it victory wine, but it ain't.

COLLINS: The Dept of Energy just canceled $1b for a hydrogen hub that covers Montana. Is that taking away good-paying jobs?

SHEEHY: Of course it is. We want govt to be open

C: But the Energy Secretary says he would've pulled that funding even if govt was open

S: ... Well, that's unfortunate

He keeps saying this, even though Jack Smith didn't join the classified docs case until a few months after the raid.

But since he keeps doing this on Fox News, where they are on the same team, he won't get called out on it.

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

Remember the Trump administration's unsuccessful Labor Day effort to expel children to Guatemala?

The lawyers filed an amended complaint today, expanding the scope of the litigation — reflecting the long-term goals of the administration to do the same thing with kids from many countries.
INTRODUCTION
1. This is a complaint on behalf of hundreds of children at risk of unlawful removal
from the United States.
2. Plaintiffs are unaccompanied minors in Office of Refugee Resettlement (“ORR”)
custody whom Defendants have sought or are seeking to remove from the United States in clear
violation of the unambiguous protections that Congress has provided them as vulnerable
children. Defendants have unlawfully claimed the power to expel these children, in violation of
the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 (“TVPRA”), the Immigration
and Nationality Act (“INA”), and the Constitution. Plaintiffs seek to represent a class of
unaccompanied children who are or will be placed in ORR custody and who do not have a final
order of removal or grant of voluntary departure by an immigration judge

At a press conference today, the mayor of Everett said there was a knife found in the child’s possession but *no* gun. I followed up with ICE and asked if they stand by the screenshot shared yesterday. Spokesperson said DHS was working on a response. Five hours later, still nothing.

This is the response I received from ICE when I inquired about the 13-year-old they abducted from Everett, Mass. on Friday:
Good afternoon, Marisa.
Please see the below from DHS on the 13-year-old alien.
Please feel free to direct any questions to them.
Respectfully,
James

Indiana University fires IDS
adviser amid push to control
student newspaper's content The director of student media at Indiana University was fired amidst a dispute between university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

As director of student media, Jim Rodenbush did not directly oversee or have any say over the content published in the IDS, per a charter between the IDS and the university. But he told IndyStar his firing follows a series of meetings with IU Media School leadership in which it grew increasingly apparent they were expecting him to officially prohibit students from publishing news.
