I am thrilled that the remaining hostages have been released, but when the dust (really rubble) settles, absolutely no one who had any power to stop the war will come out of this looking good. Horrible people all around…

Bad journalists support other bad journalists because it makes them think they’re actually good at their job. Neither of these people are a good standard for journalism. They’re bad and should not have the positions they have.

This is really smart. Amazed at the hysteria over the ascendance of a woman entrepreneur who clearly knows how to cover and sell news and who's not afraid to take on a mob. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Bar associations need to start disbarring. There's immediate precedent with Giuliani. To the point @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social has repeatedly made, a polity that allows elites to repeatedly lie, obviously and with impunity, is not sustainable. Feels like the legal profession is at the same juncture.

The case against Comey is beyond weak. The case against James is worse. It is based on a lie, and they know they're lying because exculpatory evidence that contradicts the indictment had already been presented to a grand jury in another jurisdiction. Everyone involved with this needs to be disbarred

This is a surprisingly good analysis of the current situation. It reinforces the reality that the war should have been ended long ago. Hamas is an idea as much as it is an organization & will only cease to exist when both sides have decent leaders & there is peace. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/12/o...

What a horrific tragedy. This is what happens when people decide it’s acceptable for drug users to die, and when we allow law enforcement to pretend to be experts on drugs and how drugs work. It’s very likely that this man would be alive today if he had received medical care instead of imprisonment.

“For more than 3 hours, officers can be seen walking past while he lay on the floor in his urine in obvious distress…noting he was foaming at the mouth & having seizure-like activity…mistaking his medical emergency for a drug overdose…”

Except a drug overdose is also a medical emergency...

I haven’t paid much attention to the Nobel Peace Prize since Obama won in 2009 for not being George W. Bush. Some great people and movements have won over the years but politics is always going to be politics and this award is ultimately political…

The Virginia Senate just told UVA it’s not getting state funding if it accepts the compact since UVA exists to serve Virginia, its residents, & their interests—not be a tool of the federal govt. More of this. Signing this authoritarian devil’s bargain would betray higher education’s independence and the pursuit of knowledge.

I honestly would not be surprised if some of the schools agreed to the deal.

I don't know about this. I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of the public schools on the list accepted the deal and who the hell knows what Penn is going to say...

Here's a snippet from the MIT president's letter to ED
Screenshot from link that reads: The document also includes principles with which we disagree, including those that would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution. And fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, without preferences. Therefore, with respect, we cannot support the proposed approach to addressing the issues facing higher education.

Black families tend to have strong preferences against nursing homes, usually driven by concerns of inadequate care. Seeing that Black nursing home patients have significantly worse outcomes, and that they are driven by *within-nursing home* differences in care, confirms this suspicion.
