nme.com/news/music/paul-mccartney-responds-to-rishi-sunaks-plan-for-another-beatles-museum-in-liverpool-3088760 In discussing the unique circumstances that helped The Beatles to exist - along with the cultural revolution of the '60s in general - McCartney also hailed Labour's 1947 Transport Act which helped them to meet on buses (and inspired a great number of his songs) but the Education Act of 1944 which made schooling much open and fairer for his generation and others to follow. Speaking of public transport when he was growing up, McCartney said: "It was this amazing system, and I didn't realise that we were kind of the first generation to benefit from that. "Also, there was an education act that meant that kids like me from not very well-off homes could go to very posh schools. This gave everyone over Britain this opportunity to be more mobile and better educated - and that was a big factor in the cultural revolution."

#Onthisday October 7, 1965, 60 years ago today, the Washington Avenue Bridge over the Mississippi River opened to vehicle traffic. From the Minneapolis Tribune the day before:

Washington Av. Bridge to Open to Vehicles Back in 1937 Alderman Heny Bank said, "The Washington Av. bridge is in the worst condition it's ever been in. Not only should it be closed to football traffic, but should be closed to all traf fic." From that day were discussed on plans for new bridge. After nearly 30 years of talking and three years of e building, the new two - level structure will open for vehicle it traffic Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The bridge will be open to two-way traffic in the south lanes only. Fifteenth Av SE. will be close at the same time time east of Johnston Hall. On Thursday only, eastbound Twin Cities buses will s turn right on 15th to Pills- it left bury to liverso mon left to Union St… and right to Washington Av. There will be no bus top at ar 17th Av. SE, and Washington Av. this day only. The course of westbound buses will be the same. On Friday all bus service will return to the normal routes. The old bridge will close to pedestrians and traffic as soon as the new one opens. Demolition will begin in December.

In hindsight, that’s one hell of a question posed by the Minnesota Daily in 1968.
Headline: How could U have stopped O. J. Simpson? Bob Windsor Graduate student "I think the Gophers did all they or any other team possibly could to stop Simpson, but he's just too good. I don't think the Gophers could stopped have him no matter what they tried. I doubt if any defense will, for that matter." Mrs. Maryse Raas Civil servant "Who's O. J. Simpson?" John Roth Graduate student "The problem was that the Gophers didn't have players on the field. They could nave stopped Simpson if they would have used 16 players on defense, three more linebackers and two more ends. Too bad, that's not legal." Christi Worth CLA freshman "I guess O. J. is almost impossible to stop. I really can't find fault with Minnesota's defense because I doubt if any defense will Simpson. work against I've seen a lot of good football players, but he is something special." Steve Block Education junior "Oh, I suppose they could have broken his leg or tried to maim him. But otherwise I don't know of any way that Minnesota could have stopped him cold. With his speed and strength, he was really something out there."
