The many moods of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. America's greatest wilderness.

Got back up here for the first time in 6 years, once again getting outfitted by Voyageur Canoe Outfitters. Minnesota at its best.

The hills of the BWCA looking across Ogishkemuncie Lake on a moody evening. A couple of canoes tucked on a rocky shore along a campsite in the 1.1 million acre wilderness area on the periphery. The kids swimming on a perfect beach with a rad gradient from gravel to sky blue on big Sag Lake. The BWCA forest lingers along the horizon. The boy fishes on a rocky shore. A Wenonah canoe reflecting the last light of the day. The ever-present forest is cast in shadows along the horizon under painterly clouds. Portaging from Alpine into Jasper Lake. The kids and wife wait while their uncles place a pair of Kevlar canoes into the water from a rocky shore. The young forest is a radiant green along the shores.
Think the Brew Crew need to win one for the folks down at the George Street Pub.
Some day I'll get a round at La Crosse, Wisconsin's George Street Pub. The perfect Brewers bar.

A small single story bar with a giant baseball cap in the classic Milwaukee Brewers colors. A giant baseball cap protruding from a simple brick facade with the logos of most of Wisconsin's sports franchises.
Totally worth a visit. Lots of great spots around town and over in Covington on the Kentucky side. Seriously one of my favorite cities.
More from a summer trip to Cincy.
Cincinnati was rad. A place that felt equally East Coast while being squarely in the Midwest. Missing teeth in places, yet containing multitudes.

Here's a montage of Over the Rhine scenes.

A stair bordered by greenery descends into Over the Rhine. Brick buildings line the streets. A bright mural, depicting a closeup of oranges on a tree, covers the side of a building halfway down the block. Power lines crisscross the frame. The Venetian Gothic Cincinnati Music Hall spreads across the frame. A pair of steeples border a grand pinnacle with rose stain glassed window. Closer in frame folks sit under blue umbrellas on patio seating. A school bus opens its door. A richly-textured mural of bearded man is center frame, peeling in places. At left you find two grayscale Italianate 3-flats with cream accents and blue doors. On the right hand side a brightly colored mural of a girl and a bear covers the side of another building. A street scene straight out of Europe, except your in the American Midwest. The old world Findlay Market sits behind streetcar catenary and large stone planters. The three and four-story brick Italianate buildings beside the market are painted in a cornucopia of colors.
Made it back to Cincinnati last month. Another Over the Rhine meander was a must.

Findlay Market on a busy Saturday morning in the heart of Over the Rhine. A warehouse with a church like form. Bay windows with ornate, decorative partings reach up a red brick facade. A woman walks by a church in the Northern Liberties section of OTR.
I’ve been on way too many flights this year. I’ve somehow been in empty or partially empty rows about half my flights. Delta recently upgraded my status and the streak continues for two more flights.
Upgraded to an empty row of Comfort seats on a Delta flight.

At the Store for Ice Cream.

Silver Islet, Ontario
Ah. The 7 year old started making his own sandwiches and may have been using the same knife for the hippy peanut butter we get and the honey. I used to make them with banana slices but they’re in a boring phase.
Same. Kids might have been fed them at school. But my kids are weirdos and prefer peanut butter and honey sandwiches.

Roper does a good job illuminating what's great and where there are serious problems.

They need more RICO cases against the organized crime rings responsible for the drug trade.

It's startling to see how brazen drug dealers are in downtown Minneapolis.
"I think the bike improvements are making the city much more desirable, and downright Amsterdam-ish at times. Watch the parents delivering kids to school on cargo bikes and you start to realize there’s an interesting shift going on."

Roper: Doomsday docs aside, Minneapolis’ lush urbanity makes it a special place to call home
The city blossoms in the warmer months, even when bad headlines drown out what makes it great.

Sigh...

Maybe somebody else will take those events on. The Downtown Council clearly didn't care.

He DOES throw really inane interceptions, though.
That was his second of the season…
This is two days after I watched an older German gentleman eat a muffin with a fork in Potsdam, New York.
I just had my server at a small town Connecticut diner ask if I wanted a muffin grilled. I looked at him for a second trying tot compute what he had just said.

Whichever player brought the L flag is immediately a Brewers legend
The Brewers were previously the short-lived Seattle Pilots, which lead directly to the Mariners expansion team.
On April 1, 1970, the franchise moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and became the Milwaukee Brewers. After the move, Seattle and King County sued the American League, which consequently granted the city a new expansion franchise, the Seattle Mariners.
It’s been a long slog. I laugh at Twins fans thinking they’re cursed. Come on. I know cursed. And it all ends this year.
