“I remember people dissing Pet Sounds. I really do, in the late ’80s. And 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘵 about Bread.”

This week on Range & Basin, I reflect on the dreamy new record from Wilco-side project The Autumn Defense and share a vintage 2012 interview with bassist John Stirratt.

Today is the 75th anniversary of Peanuts and to celebrate, I noted a few of my favorite Vince Guaraldi tunes—including some words about this jazz mass featuring Philip K. Dick-associate Bishop James Pike.

We also learned that she was a renowned cooker of beans, apparent Michael Hurley adapter, and early feminist who liked hangin out with weird people (Cheech Marin among them)!

For a time shortly after the soundtrack came out I was obsessed with finding a quality recording of the version of "Blood of Eden" that's in the film (since it wasn't on the soundtrack). I think I finally tracked down a CD single that had it, which felt like a huge victory at the time.

How does a song become a prayer?

As part of @southwestreview.bsky.social's Needle Drops column, I penned a few words about Peter Gabriel's "Blood of Eden" and Wim Wenders' 1991 tech noir dreamtime masterpiece Until The End of the World.

look, i'm not really sure if music sounds better on vinyl (& not terribly interested in debating) *but* books definitely read better as mass market paperbacks.

Some important info on Kaleb Horton and his writing for MTV: as I learned, he'd reupped the Merle piece on his site earlier this year, but otherwise his 2016-2017 work there was scrubbed and long unavailable. Happily, I was able to find a Wayback link with them all. Share, read, and remember.

I'm so sad to learn about @kalebhorton.bsky.social's passing; he was one of my favorite writers, eagle-eyed, full of heart, and always on point. He was so good I once asked him for some general tips, and here's what he shared. It's a dimmer world without him.

LA's Phi-Psonics collective delivers a pair of Duke Ellington compositions (including “Fleurette Africaine” from the seminal Money Jungle), early sixties Sun Ra, and “River Man” from Nick Drake’s debut album.
