Maternal-child health advocacy and momming (human, cat, dog), mostly.
Imagine you're just working at some federal department like you've been doing for years, minding your business, and next thing you know the President is talking about not only not paying you, but also sounds like a mob boss about to take a hit out on you.
On whether he believes federal workers should receive furlough backpay, President Donald Trump says "There's some people that really don't deserve to be taken care of and we'll take care of them in a different way."

Working in maternal-child health and nutrition policy and having a spouse who is an environmental engineer in air quality and community environmental protection is just…a lot right now.
Breaking news: The Environmental Protection Agency announced a proposal to rescind the landmark legal opinion that underpins virtually all of its regulations to curb climate change.
EPA moves to end climate regulation under Clean Air Act
The agency proposal would rescind the landmark “endangerment finding,” which says that greenhouse gases are a threat to public health.

Just got notified that my health insurance is dropping my healthcare provider effective July 1, and it will not be considered a qualifying event to choose another plan so that I can stay with my provider - I'll be randomly assigned a new provider. Doesn't seem like it should work that way?

Long covid is now the most common chronic condition experienced by American children. That might have something to do with why chronic absenteeism has worsened across the country.
According to the study, preschool participation lags behind pre-pandemic levels, reading and math scores dropped further and chronic absenteeism worsened across the country.
UPDATE: Study: California lags behind nation in education, economic well-being of kids

See previous post about my kid wiping out a $6 lb of strawberries in one sitting. He’s older than WIC age, but even as a toddler, $10 in today’s food costs…maybe 3-4 days of produce?
Parents of young kids in the “berry budget” age range, weigh in: how long would $10 for fruits and vegetables last you?

$10 is the *monthly* amount the Trump administration just proposed for toddlers & preschoolers on WIC—a 62% cut.
🗣️President Trump’s proposed FY26 budget would roll back WIC's fruit and vegetable benefits to pre-2021 levels, before USDA’s science-based increase.

Breastfeeding moms would drop from $54 → $13
Young kids: $27 → $10

These cuts jeopardize early nutrition. Read the full NWA statement:

My son ate a $6 lb of strawberries in one sitting yesterday after swim practice. SNAP benefits are $6 PER DAY. Feeding kids healthy food is prohibitively expensive and time-consuming sometimes/for some families, and it's out of touch to pretend it's not.

Every California GOP House member voted to gut food assistance and healthcare and take on massive debt to please Trump and give more money to billionaires.

David Valadao (CD 22) cast the deciding vote (it passed 215-214). In his district 87% of kids and 67% of all residents rely on Medicaid.

turns out the GOP budget bill adds so much to deficits that it will automatically trigger cuts to Medicare (not just Medicaid).

I'm from a county that only has two very small hospitals, few doctors providers, and over 20% of the population is covered by Medicaid. The idea that providers and services will remain in business and able to provide all the same care to non-Medicaid patients in the face of these cuts is wild.
My daughter’s speech therapist went out of business because Medicaid reimbursement rates were too low. We do not have Medicaid. I’m going to keep posting this until people understand that when Medicaid gets cut *everyone* loses services.

Here’s why Trump’s plan to gut Head Start will hurt you, even if you don’t have kids
