At the #StandUpforScience rally in Chicago, one of the speakers mentioned that the most important six words are "let me tell you a story" when it comes to trying to explain why science funding is important. The idea is to explain to everyday people how the work we (scientists) do makes life better.
Group of people at a rally with signs. One sign says "freedom of science" and another says" science is a candle in the dark. Don't let fascism snuff it out."

Due process. Academic freedom. An independent judiciary. A free press. A professional civil service. A protected environment. These aren't partisan talking points; they are the pillars of a healthy nation. And every single one of them is under direct assault by the Trump administration.

As I've noted, central to Stephen Miller's propaganda is the claim that the Chicago complex targeted by ICE was "filled" with Tren de Aragua "terrorists."

Now @jacobsoboroff.bsky.social reports that the number of TdA members netted in that raid is down to *one.*

Large magnets and guns don't go well together. So we should be safe.

Sad day. Ramping down our 7T MRI to remove some ice.
Left, MRI super conducting magnet. Large orange cables going into magnet. Right, electronics rack.

The Trump admin trying to incite violence is super cringey because everyone knows that’s what they’re doing. Picture future historians watching that monotone dimwit Kristi Noem get clowned by a city in frog costumes while pretending it’s a war zone. We’re in the dumbest timeline.

You would not fire these people—including the staff of the hugely, HUGELY important 'Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report'—if you cared at all about public health, if you wanted people to live.

And you would not let your thuggish henchmen fire people like this if you were a responsible president.

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

October 10 marks World Mental Health Day. This year, we want to reiterate a profound speech by our dear friend and the President of Mind, Sir Stephen Fry.
In Ukraine, people are being challenged with keeping ourselves together amidst war and terror almost daily.

At issue is what is actually happening at Broadview, Perry says.
Local law enforcement agencies say the protests are under control, while federal officials say they present an urgent threat.
Perry: "DHS' perception of events are simply unreliable."

Chicagoans won a temporary restraining order today that prevents federal agents from using tear gas, pepper spray and other weapons against journalists and peaceful protesters.
We’re fighting back peacefully in Chicago because — unlike Trump — we believe in the rule of law.

My statement on Middle East peace
A white graphic with a blue border includes the following text:

My Statement on Middle East Peace
October 9, 2025

After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.

Perry: How do you respond to the plaintiffs' contention that any unrest, any violence is the fault of how federal agents are interacting with members of the public? Does it matter if their conduct is why they can't execute federal laws?
Hamilton: No.

This administration is flooding the zone so furiously that people have largely lost track of the lethal attacks on boats in the Caribbean, the gov’t shutdown, the economy, failed release of the Epstein files & so much else. It’s a tactic of would-be strongmen.

Everyone can set aside partisanship, psychologizing, pathologizing, whatever, and—I would hope—still see that it’s incredibly dangerous for a political leader to be this disconnected from the real conditions in the country.

One of the (many) legal gaps that needs to be filled after this nightmare is over is to prohibit federal law enforcement agencies from using federal funds to create propaganda videos with anyone in custody. This is all about spectacle and content creation, remove the incentive and the means

So long as the House stays out of session, he’ll keep refusing to seat Rep. Grijalva—the 218th vote on the Epstein files discharge petition. See how desperate they are?
Tweet from Aaron Rupar:
“Mike Johnson ignores a question about when he’ll swear in Rep.-elect Grijalva and walks away.”
