The September newsletter is up. I wrote about some interesting Google search stats that suggest 〜ていただきありがとうございます is more commonly used than 〜てくださってありがとうございます...by a fairly large margin. newsletter.howtojapanese.com/itadaki/
いただき
Make your thank yous more natural by reorienting the phrase around the receiving of the action rather than the giving.

Precisely the person Justice Kavanaugh said would not be inconvenienced.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.
Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

Question for former JETs, or anyone who's taught in Japan/applied to teaching programs. If you were given an alternate position but ultimately not selected to go on JET, would you include that in your application essay for the following year? If so, how prominently would you feature it?

There were at least two ceasefires under Biden! In which more than five times as many living Israeli hostages were released in exchange for 240 Palestinians! Has everyone forgotten this?

Also, ceasefires have happened under prior Presidents! The day he gets Palestine their own country he can be told he's the most special boy deserving of a shiny prize.

Yet again @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social of Garbage Day manages to describe the roots of our global cultural predicament in a single paragraph. This is from today's essay on the manosphere turning against Trump:

www.garbageday.email/p/the-great-...
But their blatant stupidity is why they’re so popular. It’s the uncomfortable truth underpinning pretty much everything that’s happened in pop culture — including politics — since the 2010s social media revolution. The online platforms that created our new world, run on likes and shares and comments and views, reshaped the marketplace of ideas into an attention economy. One that, like a real economy, is full of very popular garbage. And, also like a real economy, is now so vast and important that it’s virtually impossible to change it. If you want access to it, you better get comfortable making lowest-common-denominator bullshit in front of a camera. And, of course, it’s a lot easier to feel good about doing that if you’re an idiot.

For those who don’t intimately understand how news works and why Bari Weiss’s unearned elevation to head of CBS News matters, I’d recommend watching this in entirety. Also, will forever point out irony of how an admitted DEI hire thinks her hire was meritorious while Black people’s aren’t.

Anyone have recommendations for オーブンレンジ in Japan? Need a new one that's more powerful than my current one. Seems like they only get up to 250C if you get a model with microwave features. Don't have enough space for a separate oven and microwave.

So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS won’t agree to send him there because it’s not cruel enough.

www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/u...
For weeks, Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who is married to a U.S. citizen, has made clear that he would not challenge his deportation if he were sent to Costa Rica, which has promised him legal residency and guaranteed that he would not be sent back to El Salvador.

But the Trump administration has refused to deport him to Costa Rica, and in an earlier hearing this week, Judge Xinis pressed the administration to consider the option or clarify why it was unacceptable.

I don't usually drink Sapporo (I'll never forgive them for ditching Anchor Brewing), but I wanted to see what this was all about. And it's actually a decent lager. Very full bodied and bitter compared to the usual stuff. It's baked potato night in Osaka.
A can of Sapporo's new Extra Think lager poured into a glass with a baked potato and a bowl of beans and rice in the background.

I was fully prepared to hate on this beer, but somehow...it lives up to the name? It's basically a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale knock off. Maybe a tad less hoppy/bitter, but those elements are still present. It doesn't hold back.
Kirin's new "Good Ale" beer in a 12oz can poured into a glass with frothy white foam.

I actually think this mindset is key to the whole enterprise. It is certainly key to anime’s authenticity.

For too long we’ve seen “Galapagos” used to denigrate Japan’s inward focus. But in a world gone crazy, it has made Japan (and things from Japan) an oasis. Stay tuned for more about this soon.

Fascinating: "When I asked the editor of a major manga magazine how much thought they gave to foreign consumers when planning new series, they told me none — because how would they know what foreign people wanted?"

"Republicans blocked paying the troops during the shutdown but found $20 billion to bail out Argentina's bad crypto investments" should be the sort of thing that leads every local newscast, but...
fritschner.bsky.social
A few minutes ago in the House:

- Speaker Mike Johnson officially cancels votes next week, extending the House recess through a fourth week

- House Republicans block Democrats from passing a bill to pay the troops during the shutdown, ensuring they will miss paychecks next week
House Press Gallery: During today's pro forma session, the Clerk read a message from the Speaker designating Tuesday, October 14 through Sunday, October 19 as a district work period. Punchbowl's Briana Reilly: House gaveled in and out of its pro forma just now w/o recognizing Rep Elfreth, who was seeking to UC a mil pay bill from Rep Sykes.

Elfreth told reporters after that House Dems stand “ready and willing to take” up standalone legislation to pay troops.

Donald Trump is not a king — and his administration is not above the law.

Today, the court confirmed what we all know: there is no credible evidence of a rebellion in the state of Illinois.

And no place for the National Guard in the streets of American cities like Chicago.

I use Scrivener to draft everything. Can't recommend highly enough. Does require some finesse if you want to output large projects exactly as you want into Office formats but I managed it for the book I self published.
