Reminder that not only do library systems have physical media (& many also lend tools, electronics etc), your library card may give you access to streamers Kanopy and Hoopla. We just watched Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of The Rainmaker via a hoopla the other night. Pretty good!
“As prices for streaming subscriptions continue to soar and finding movies to watch, new and old, is becoming harder as the number of streaming services continues to grow, people are turning to the unexpected last stronghold of physical media: the public library.”
The Last Video Rental Store Is Your Public Library
Audio-visual librarians are quietly amassing large physical media collections amid the IP disputes threatening select availability.

Missing my former colleague David Golumbia a lot today, as I keep working on a chapter about the gross tech rationalist community. I wish I could have talked to him about *all of this.*
i’ve been looking forward to this book for so long, and now that i have the galley i can’t help feel a little sad i won’t get to discuss it with david.

i’ll be discussing on the podcast somehow, and i hope you all buy a copy — even preorder!

Holy CRAP.

Retired engineer takes random pics of *kids*, without consent or attribution, bins them into “autistic” or “not autistic”, and uploads that “data” for free on Kaggle.

Well over a HUNDRED papers are published, 38 in Springer Nature, 25 in IEEE, using it.

And no reviewers objected? WTF.🧪
Springer Nature retracts, removes nearly 40 publications
The dataset contains images of children’s faces downloaded from websites about autism, which sparked concerns at Springer Nature about consent and reliability.

Spotify is garbage on every count: Its treatment of artists, its ICE advertising, the CEO's investment in military AI, its leading role in the commodification and AI slopification of music, its terrible audio quality—you name it.

So I quit, and put together a complete guide to getting off Spotify:

I fear for the usage of AI becoming more commonplace, especially in the higher education system.

I fear that, at least for healthcare, it will become easier to avoid learning the complex aspects of health administration. Quality assurance courses are going to get the world's biggest overhaul.

For example: If you have the means to not use streaming services and support artists directly, then that is great. You should exploit that privilege to stop supporting streaming services.

You should not, however, demand everybody else match your privilege. This is antithetical to class solidarity.
