The mood of the game is very unique too, managing to capture the magic of the original star wars films. There’s an immediacy to the sci fi setting, topics, and tech, but this resonant sense of mystery and awe ala epic or mythical fantasy storytelling. It manages to find the balance quite deftly.

The palette swap sci-fi dungeons are Phantasy Star IV's greatest weakness
The only major flaw I would point out is the background work. The character sprites are brilliant but the backgrounds and areas have this tendency to lack depth and definition, so they blend together and make everything look a lot less detailed (and more amateurish) than the game actually is.

Despite the huge cast I came to appreciate most if not all of them, particularly the standbys loke Rika and Wren. The mechanical nuances of each character with the blend of techniques, skills, combo attacks, and the distinction between androids/biological party members made each feel distinct.

About the only other series I can think of that does this consistently is the Tales games and even then (afaik) it’s just little side conversations. These panels heighten dramatic moments and make the characters feel far more developed without fully divorcing you from the game like a cutscene might.

Similarly, the manga panel cutscenes are brilliant. My understanding is that this was originally meant to be a Sega CD title with full animated sequences (ala Lunar), but this was the comprimise for releasing it on a 16-bit system. Honestly, I’m glad this was the result. It’s very effective.
