Just because you don’t like what’s reported doesn’t mean you have to belittle the journalist involved. No newsroom, especially one like RNZ, appoints newbies to the parliamentary press gallery - there’s no need for this repost @mountaintui.bsky.social
It’s entirely possible/probable she’s tried to approach others for comment today but they can only run what they’ve got. Peters etc are the ones kicking up a fuss, it absolutely makes sense to report it. Whether RNZ has approached the broadcasting minister (who actually has powers) is less clear.
I had to wear it at an all girls school in Christchurch while my brother’s school didn’t require it. They finally ditched them a few years back. The only good looking tie is a non-compulsory one, preferably worn by a woman in a suit. 😆
Oh this sounds like an amazing conference on so many levels.
It’s entirely possible Barry that they do say that, but it’s unlikely anyone’s going to run that because it’s not really relevant (and people criticise Luxon for avoiding questions and turning it back to his talking points like this all the time). I know it doesn’t feel the same but…
Yeah, Hipkins’ comment felt a bit off, but I suspect he may have been avoiding commenting and then the latest news came out and so he potentially got asked about it again. Willie’s comments feel more disciplined.
I was terrified to come out even after NZ legalised gay marriage because I knew what the general messaging of the church, and the vibes of my family (which have shifted) were. It’s taken time, painful conversations and likely being with my partner to “normalise” it all since coming out.
It doesn’t matter that you’re NOW living in a world where gay rights are a thing, if you’ve been surrounded (subtly or not) by homophobic messaging since childhood that being gay is wrong and gay relationships are bad that’s formative stuff, it’s hard to break through.
I have no idea who those Youtubers are but it’s really grating that everyone’s going “haha we knew they were gay” without actually looking at the underlying issue that they hid their relationship for SIXTEEN YEARS.
It’s not some cute story, it’s an example of how childhood homophobia fucks you up.
It’s all about who you rank last these days (jokes, but seriously how were there so many) and then shuffling the boring candidates in middle and putting your best at the top 😂
Better watch out for any new Hamilton city councillors now Tim Macindoe has been promoted to mayor. He somehow has a terrible track record of successors…
Will be interesting to see if it’s a 19 year old who is less savvy in veiling their comments compared to those who’ve been making hateful statements as a hobby for decades, or if they were just outrightly intent on threatening Doyle. Will be interesting to see if others are charged.
I’m frustrated by the lack of discussion about how there is currently a bill before the house to address this exact issue, but when it’s only conducted against MPs. It’s definitely an issue, but I’m not convinced the Govt proposing to legislate fines or prison time (no warnings) isn’t hyping it up

Comparing NZ supermarket pay and benefits.

Kmart & Woolworths employees all enjoy the same pay and conditions across NZ. Pak'nSave/Foodstuffs employees have variable pay and conditions depending on employer and bargaining strength.

Join your union and win better pay and conditions!
A table that compares starting pay rates, 6 month and 1 year pay rates, and various other benefits across Kmart, Woolworths and Three Pak'nSave stores: Kilbirnie, Royal Oak and Richmond. Kmart scores the best overall, then Pak'nSave Kilbirnie and Woolworths, though Pak'nSave Royal Oak has all benefits (but lower pay rates). Notable is the differences between different Pak'nSave stores, with Kilbirnie scoring so high, and Richmond being by far the lowers, with substantially lower pay and none of the benefits.
It’s because they’ve got a bill in front of Parliament to ban protests outside of MPs homes.
They arrested a guy for wearing a Plasticene Action tee so the bar is in hell
Basically, to a lot of conservative Christians their main belief is that those who aren’t Christian are going to hell unless they get “saved” so it’s been easy to shun others from the get-go. If they won’t have a come-to-Jesus moment then they can be judged or bothered about their “misdeeds”.

“How do you find the defendant: guilty or not guilty?”

“Guilty.”

“And is that the unanimous view of you all?”

“Yes, your Honour. Eight of us aren’t going to stand for it and four us won’t take it sitting down.”
A rare trip behind the scenes in a regional courthouse today, including a jury room that only had eight chairs.

Travelling in China, we’ve spotted some great shirts.
Misspellings, nonsense phrases or outright absurdities (such as swear words on children’s clothing).
One which just repeated the phrase “fuck you” to form the silhouette of a panda. It takes the cake so far.
This comes in second.
As Midnight Oil once sang, “The rich get richer, the poor get the picture. The bombs never hit you when you're down so low”.
The community services card income cap for a family of one adult/one child is $65k.

Apparently there’s no longer a gap between those who are supposed to be able to financially support their kids and those who need CSC support 🤷🏻‍♀️
Cowardly announcing policy on a Sunday that underlines the total failure of this government’s policies.

Just a reminder that a policy to reduce the number of people on benefits isn’t the same as ensuring they have jobs.

The language and metrics used in policy decisions can create perverse outcomes.

but they'll still pay adult prices to go to the doctor (and for everything else) and still be treated as adults by the justice system etc etc etc.

$65k is NOTHING in this economy holy shit. Heaven forbid we have a safety net.

Disgraceful. Absurd. As with the Kimmel situation, politicians across the world want to suppress protest and creative resistance. They hate opposition. They hate protest. They hate satire. They hate art. Soon we will wake up and find our mouths gagged, our hands tied, our pens and laptops taken away
