I like to think so, but that's one of the things that makes a growing nasty element consider me, my colleagues and educators to be unhinged and dangerous to the young.

My childhood was also ... suboptimal in certain ways. I try not to be an asshole these unless "asshole" is defined as pushing back against people who are trying to stomp my boundaries and get their own way.

Let kids read what they want and talk them through anything that confuses or bothers them. Forcing them to read things they truly dislike is bound to kill their curiosity.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Got both on Friday after work.

I'm watching Pet Sematary (2019) for Indigenous Peoples Day because one of the morals is "Don't muck with First Nation burial grounds." #FilmSky @stephenking.bsky.social

Books on paranoia? ::whisper:: they're right behind you

Months back there was a story about Taylor Swift joining Willy Nelson(?) on stage at an arena show for a big protest song with the message "You know what this is about." I'm now convinced it's AI and/or spam because I just saw the exact same story with Taylor joining Kelly Clarkson.

I do try to curate what I share on a personal level (age, known trauma) but that's not from censorship. I took unapproved stuff as a kid and would rather talk a current kid through a book that confused or bother them than risk breaking their curiosity.

I'm inclined to watch at least part of the half time show because I'm now curious about Bad Bunny.

We try. I've had someone tell me it isn't my job to share certain things, but YES IT FUCKING IS. I'm here to promote freedom of information, and if I decided to play censor because I disagree with a book's contents or author I'd be a shite librarian.

I've been masking in public, and the individuals who have felt compelled to cuss me out on the street can feck off.

Yeah. That's part of why they have that rule. I've also given automatic NOPE to the question of local patrons buying borrowed items from outside lenders. Yes, we KNOW the book is expensive and hard to find, that's why THEY bought it. And they want it back.

One outside library I occasionally borrow from lends materials with the condition that they stay inside the requesting library. Years back a new staffer checked out one of those books to someone claiming to be picking up for someone else, then disappeared taking the book with them. Couldn't replace.

They weren't the first Europeans to land on these shores anyway. Plus the Spanish Crown and Catholic Church (Crusades, Inquisition and witch hunts, anyone?) disavowed Columbus after they heard what he'd done and formally approved hating on him.

Return the borrowed books!

This has been going around for years, still very relevant.

Dad showed me that when I was still young enough that I knew James Earl Jones as the voices of Darth Vader and Mufasa, but hadn't actually SEEN him yet.

With all the hype about the upcoming Spaceballs sequel, something from the end of Sneakers has been in my head.

He wants a Winnebago.
Fine! A Winnebago!

Serious question: How many "antichrists" have been declared without the supposed resultant apocalypse kicking off?

I've been curious - what makes a tree or forest "virgin"?
