I wish it weren’t necessary, but I do firmly believe every single person in the US should at the very least know how to check and clear a gun, because there is a non-zero chance you will need to do so at some point in your life.
also, since i've apparently started a Gun Conversation on bluesky again:
-i don't love that I have to live in a country where I own firearms to defend myself and wish that was different
-i am not going to unilaterally disarm, particularly as an LGBT person who is active in politics
And, to put an explicit point on it, as a gun owner, I do *not* want to have to use my firearms to defend myself/family and kill another human being.

I will if I absolutely have to, but I would much rather live in society where we have, you know, laws, and prisons for violent criminals, so I don’t

You've heard of the Friday night news dump. Here's the Friday night of Thanksgiving wknd dump. For special circumstances, like when the faculty assembly votes 595-4 against paying to end a shakedown and you do it anyway. Link to agreement here: bulkmail.northwestern.edu/trk/click?re...

‘Remigration’ is a term that comes out of the European far right. Its use by the DHS account is a sign of democratic and epistemic collapse

The continuing cowardice and eager compliance with authoritarianism from institutions of higher education is simultaneously sickening and unsurprising

I asked my mom what she wanted for dinner and she silently went and grabbed a folder from a filing cabinet. I assumed she was going to do something grim and boomerish, like choose right now to go over her will, but instead it was a bunch of local takeout menus, which is somehow even more boomerish!

Stephen Miller is doing raw, open white supremacy. The logics of Andrew Jackson and Adolph Hitler and every Jim Crow lynch mob.

And also, even the Wall Street Journal opinion page thinks the racism has gone too far, which is really saying a lot about exactly how extreme it is 🙃
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

Hate to be posting this on a holiday, but there's been renewed interest in the CIA-backed Zero Units in Afghanistan. Here's a good summary of @propublica.org's 2022 reporting on the units and just some of the civilian casualties they were responsible for:

JD Vance is like that scene from 30 Rock where they try to decipher century-old racial slurs and derogatory phrases except instead of satire and fictional characters he’s the literal Vice President of the United States.
JD Vance loves spreading 16th century pro-genocide propaganda so much
VP JD Vance stood before a crowd and tried to falsify history, claiming Christians ended widespread mass child-sacrifice practices among Native Americans

It does seem like a missed opportunity that he left out all bamboo metaphors, when together their gross malpractice was the equivalent of throwing the ideals of journalism into a punji stick trap.

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

Just think: two years ago, Henry Kissinger died the first night of ASEEES. This year, the conference hotel is the site of where Hinckley shot Ronald Reagan. The wall may have fallen, but I’m starting to think the Slavists are getting the last laugh in the Cold War!
